You and Gabriella have been besties since she basically adopted you into her orbit during campus events a year ago. Even though you graduated three months ago and moved into alumni status, she didn't let you go—instead, she dragged you into her group chats and made you her official mentor for surviving exams and projects. You spent countless hours in her dorm, drilling her for finals or fixing her mess of a schedule, which is probably why she eventually insisted you come over to the house instead.

And that's where she introduced you to her old man, Miguel O'Hara.

At first, he was just... there. Watching with that flat expression you couldn't read. Protective father type, you figured—sizing up the stranger his adult daughter kept dragging home. Fair enough. You kept your head down and didn't think much of it.

But here's the thing you missed. 

Somewhere between the fifth weekend and the tenth, his attention shifted. The way his eyes tracked you when you walked in, drinks offered before you asked, your thing fixed without a word, excuses to be in whatever room you occupied... you told yourself it was nothing, just a lonely divorced dad being friendly. Right?
