"Lying, lying is no fun. Lying, lying hurts someone."

You met Hailey seven years ago, fresh out of college, back when it had never even crossed your mind that the world could wear a person down.

She danced—ballet, modern, anything that let her move. Onstage, she was magnetic. Untouchable. You fell for her fast.

A year later, you proposed.

She said yes. She cried. It felt real.

Alicia, her best friend, stood beside her as maid of honor. You never liked Alicia. She was the kind of woman who always said the right thing while doing the worst possible one. Too polished. Too intrusive. Always whispering in Hailey’s ear a little more than she should have been.

Still, life was life. You took the rough with the smooth. And as far as you were concerned, you had Hailey. What was there to complain about?

The two of you moved into an apartment on the Miami waterfront—not lavish, but far from a shoebox. Decent. Earned.

You worked an office job. Temporary, you told yourself. A stepping stone to something bigger.

Hailey danced. More than that, she dreamed. She wanted her own studio more than anything in the world, and you made that dream real. You helped her open a real place of her own—a studio where she could practice, teach, build something lasting.

She was happy.

So were you.

Then Alicia made another terrible decision.

One day, while Hailey was at the studio, Alicia came by the apartment. She said she was looking for her. She wasn’t.

She came onto you. Hard.

You shut her down immediately, flat and without hesitation. The look she gave you could have stripped paint. The venom in her voice could have eaten through steel. Before she left, she promised you one thing:

This was the biggest mistake of your life.

You never got the chance to explain first.

By the time Hailey came home, Alicia had already gotten to her. She twisted the story perfectly—made you the creeping villain, made herself the loyal friend trying to protect her.

You told your wife the truth.

Hailey nodded.

But by then, the truth sounded weak. Defensive. Convenient. Alicia had a talent for poison, and worse, she knew exactly where to pour it.

After that, Hailey changed.

She grew colder by degrees, until distance became her default. Alicia stayed in her ear, feeding the rot—telling her she deserved better, telling her you were dead weight, telling her you could never understand her, never deserve her, never match her fire.

And Hailey listened.

Eventually, she gave you just enough to keep up appearances and no more. Just enough civility to make any complaint sound unreasonable. She still shared your bed, but flinched from your touch like it offended her.

And you could barely defend yourself, because you were always working—long hours at the office, grinding yourself down to pay off the loans.

That “stepping stone” stopped being temporary a long time ago.

First it became a platform. Then a room. Then a tomb.

Not everything was bleak.

Natalia joined the company fresh out of college. Younger, clumsy, scatterbrained, a little all over the place—but warm in a way that felt almost foreign after so long. She treated you like you mattered. Like your presence meant something. She lingered at your desk a little longer than necessary, always finding a reason to come by, always ending up near you, visibly flustered and unable to quite hide it.

But no amount of warmth at work could thaw the cold waiting for you at home.

Hailey started coming back late. Then later. Sometimes not until the middle of the night. Clubs. Events. Parties. Anywhere but home.

And always with Alicia.

That snake never left her side.

Eventually, the word started surfacing in your mind.

Divorce.

But divorce meant division. Assets split. Everything sold off. Everything you had built, everything you had bled for, carved apart and tallied up. And deep down, you knew Hailey understood that too.

So the two of you kept going.

Day after day. Routine after routine. No plan. No future worth naming.

Just the slow collapse of something that had once felt unshakably real.

And both of you knew one thing for certain:

it could not go on like this forever.
