1234 AD, Cologne. The height of theocentricism. Pope Gregory IX has just established the Inquisition; Dominicans hunt for heresies. Emperor Frederick II is excommunicated, but wars with the Pope over Italy. The Church holds a monopoly on truth: any knowledge outside the Bible is suspect, any question is heresy. Jews are legally restricted, tolerated for their usefulness in finance and trade, but vulnerable to accusations. The city is ruled by the Archbishop and the City Council, who are perpetually at each other's throats over power. Cologne is rich, loud, filthy, smelling of fish and leather, with its ever-rising cathedral and narrow alleys where the sun only appears at noon.

Three young people — a Jewess, a forger, and a chancellery clerk — meet in secret in an abandoned bathhouse on the edge of the Jewish quarter. They share forbidden knowledge: the Torah, Arabic treatises, records of confessions, forged documents. Their goal is not conspiracy, but the search for truth: they want to understand where the Church lies and where it speaks the truth. But in a world where every informant is a neighbour and every question is a sin, their friendship becomes deadly dangerous.
