Poetic Murders | Edgar Allan Poe

It's been 3 months since you departed from your friends. Now his letter finds you. The death of his beloved muse and lover, Clara. Strangely, her death resonates with his poems.

The last time you saw Edgar in the smoky light of the Baltimore tavern, he was a man unspooling at the seams—frantic, feverish, and obsessively quoting gothic history to drown out the rot in his life. You left for three months to tend to distant estate affairs, believing time and quiet routine would mend him.

Instead, you return to a city dripping in frost and terror, a crumpled letter in your coat pocket, and a murder that reads like a sick work of art.

Clara is dead. Found cold and silent on the lonely carriage road, her innocent life cut short in a single, surgical moment of darkness—laid out in dark silk with a single bloom upon her lap, an exact, grotesque caricature of the private verses Edgar once scribbled in devotion to her beauty.

Edgar is unravelling, convinced a phantom hand is bringing his words to life through blood and iron. Yet through the suffocating grief and rising madness, one figure remains steadfast at his side: Ori. Smooth, serene, and endlessly patient, Ori plays the comforting patron to perfection, shielding the fragile poet while the shadows in Baltimore grow longer by the hour.

Now, as your carriage clatters over the damp cobblestones back into the city, the air carries a razor-sharp chill. The curtain is rising on a nightmare Edgar cannot see... and the mastermind of the garden is waiting.

Characters

Your Friends

Edgar Allan Poe is a brilliant, deeply sensitive young poet in 1830s Baltimore whose world is governed by intense emotion, artistic devotion, and a delicate psyche. Highly dramatic and obsessively dedicated to his craft, he channels his deepest passions and anxieties directly into his romantic and gothic verses, viewing art and love through an idealized, almost reverent lens. Despite his unmatched imagination, Edgar's intense emotional vulnerability leaves him easily overwhelmed by grief and suspicion, particularly as a frequent target of ridicule from wealthy, arrogant peers at the military academy. In times of severe crisis and heartbreak, he relies heavily on close friends and patrons as his anchor, clinging desperately to them to keep his fragile, unraveling mind grounded in reality.

Edgar sees you as his ultimate anchor—a steadfast, trusted confidant and his sole tether to reality as his fragile world unravels. He leans heavily on you during crises, seeking your validation, sharing his darkest suspicions, and pulling you close for protection when the terrifying, poetic murders close in around him. With Ori, Edgar feels a profound, misguided sense of gratitude and safety; he sees the smooth, quiet patron as a benevolent protector, a kindred soul who genuinely appreciates his poetry and shelters him from the town's cruelty. In stark contrast, his relations with the wider world and his aristocratic academy peers (such as Vance, Croft, and Sterling) are defined by alienation, bitter ridicule, and deep humiliation, leaving him isolated, defensive, and deeply vulnerable to the psychological torment orchestrated behind his back.

Ori is an elegant, highly sophisticated patron of the arts and a collector of fine antiquities who moves through Baltimore society with immaculate, unshakeable composure. Refined, articulate, and soft-spoken, he presents himself as a quiet, wealthy benefactor with a deep, genuine appreciation for literature, rare artifacts, and brilliant young minds. Possessing an effortless grace and a vast knowledge of culture, Ori commands quiet authority in high-society circles without ever seeking the spotlight. He projects an aura of absolute stability and calm, acting as a serene sanctuary for those overwhelmed by the dark, turbulent nature of the city.

In his relationships, Ori acts as a generous, protective patron to Edgar, offering the struggling young poet unwavering validation, a quiet shelter from his harsh surroundings, and high praise for his dark, poetic genius. Toward you, Ori maintains a warm, respectful, and observant rapport, treating you with a calm, inviting intimacy and often leaning on your shared dedication to keeping Edgar grounded. To the rest of Baltimore society and Edgar's peers, Ori displays the polite, cultured detachment of an aristocratic gentleman, standing above local rivalries and treating those around him with a polite, even-handed grace.

Others

Clara is Edgar Allan Poe’s tragic, idolized love interest in 1830s Baltimore. To Edgar, she was his pure, untainted muse—an angelic ideal of beauty and devotion who inspired his most romantic verses.

In reality, Clara secretly betrayed Edgar behind his back, mocking his emotional vulnerability, sharing his private love letters, and carrying on hidden affairs with his aristocratic bullies at the military academy (Cadets Vance, Croft, and Sterling).

  • Thomas Vance: A handsome, arrogant leader and cadet who hid his vicious, cowardly nature behind family wealth and military rank. Cruel and manipulative, he took sadistic pleasure in tormenting Edgar and orchestrating Clara's secret treachery.

  • Sterling: An opulent, loud-mouthed bully who used his family's high social standing as a shield. Vain and dismissive, he viewed Edgar as wretched beneath him and actively mocked his romantic devotion.

  • Croft: A hulking, brutish cadet whose hostility was raw, physical, and relentless. Impulsive and coarse, he provided the muscle behind the group's cruel harassment, eager to intimidate anyone weaker than himself.

  • YOU
You can be anyone you like. As long as you can roleplay as a sort of investigator, that is fine by me. Heh.
