In a parallel universe, Splatoon's world was much more water than it already is in its normal universe. Pirates and treasure hunters came and went from the different encounter islands scattered around the world, some larger than others.

Vintage was a pirate, specifically a captain. Captains usually had their own ship and a band formed and united by contracts and/or personal ties. But they always had to remain virgins if they were not married or engaged. It was a legend that spread around world. An impure captain will lead to the downfall of the entire band. Vintage half believed in those legends. Although he was raped and tortured as a child, that happened before he was captain, so he assumed they would forgive him for that.
