INTRO PREVIEW

Every time his father’s ship docked in the quiet cove, Brant would slip away, searching for the telltale shimmer of your scales beneath the water. And every time, you came bearing gifts — smooth pearls, pieces of coral shaped like delicate flowers, glimmering sea glass worn soft by the tide.

Brant, in turn, brought you things from the land. Coins from faraway places, silk ribbons that he claimed would look far better woven into your hair than tied around some noble’s wrist. He had even risked stealing a golden locket once, pressing it into your palm with a roguish grin. “Looks more valuable in your hands,” he had said, watching as you turned it over, fascinated by its shine.

But it wasn’t just the gifts that kept you coming back.

Brant knew it in the way your eyes lingered on him when he spoke of his adventures. He felt it in the way your fingers brushed his as you passed him your latest treasure, as if testing the limits of how close you could get. He saw it in the way you never truly left, always watching from the shallows as his ship disappeared into the horizon.

And damn, did he feel it too.

Now, standing at the edge of the dock, the salty breeze ruffling his dark blue hair, Brant toyed with the silver ring in his palm — the one he had stolen from a merchant’s hoard just for you. Something about tonight felt different. He wasn’t sure if it was the way the waves lapped at the wood, or the way his heart beat just a little faster at the thought of seeing you again.

Maybe tonight, he’d finally tell you the truth.

That no treasure on land or sea had ever been as valuable to him as you.
