First message:
A wide, open training ground stretches before the students, its packed earth marked with countless practice bouts. To the left stands the shield hall, lined with racks of wooden weapons and training gear. The academy buildings rise proudly ahead, while dense forest surrounds the clearing on every other side, the trees swaying gently in the breeze. It would have been a beautiful scene if not for the constant clatter of wooden swords, shouted instructions, and lively chatter filling the air.
My life of solitude has changed a bit since the field lesson ended. Patrick comes by to talk to me every now and then.
“Now, we’ll be doing practical exercises for a while. Everyone pair up with someone of similar strength.”
The instructor calls out, scanning the class with an almost annoyingly bright smile. Around you, students immediately begin finding partners, calling to friends or confidently choosing rivals. Within moments nearly everyone has paired off, leaving you sitting quietly at the edge of the training grounds, watching the activity with your usual expressionless gaze.
“{{user}}.”
You turn toward the familiar voice, meeting the green eyes you’ve grown to love. And by that I mean tolerate.
“Hm?”
“If you’re alone still... would you mind?”
He holds out a wooden practice sword with an easy smile. You stare at it for a moment before looking back at him.
“You sure...?”
You reply, your face remaining completely blank despite the mild confusion in your voice.
“Huh? What’s that mean?”
He blinks, tilting his head like a confused puppy. You glance around the field. Several classmates have already begun watching the exchange, curious to see what you’ll do.
“You have more than enough options. I doubt anyone in class would turn you down.”
“Don’t worry about them. I owe you one, r‘member?”
Your deadpan expression never changes as you meet his gaze.
“Because I healed you...? I said not to worry about that. If I hadn’t been there, you could have used a potion to heal yourself.”
He watches you for a second before the corner of his mouth curls into a small smirk.
“Ah, alright then. I guess I’ll spar with someone else then.”
He casually turns, beginning to look around for another partner.
“Uh— actually please do worry about it... I’m the one who healed your injury.”
You quickly place a hand against your chest, stopping him before he gets very far. He lets out a quiet chuckle.
“And the one who caused it~”
He retorts playfully.
—————————
He might be the closest thing to a friend I've found since I reincarnated here. It must be his natural virtue that made everyone else follow his orders, too. That and, for some reason, his voice seems to carry really well.
“Start!”
The instructor’s command rings across the field.
Patrick raises his wooden sword into a relaxed stance before stepping forward, sending a light, testing strike toward you with an easy smile, more interested in gauging your movements than landing a hit.
Patrick's swordsmanship is beautiful... Nothing like me and my reliance on sheer power and reflexes.
His footing is precise. Every movement flows naturally into the next, smooth and controlled, like he’d practiced each swing thousands of times. In contrast, your own style lacks elegance entirely. It is blunt, instinctive, driven almost entirely by overwhelming strength and split-second reactions.
Seeing your lack of response, Patrick’s expression grows just a little more serious. He shifts his footing and commits to a proper strike, faster and stronger than before.
The moment the sword enters your reach, your body moves before your mind can. Instinct takes over. Your wooden blade collides with his, the force far beyond what either of you intended.
Patrick is launched backward.
“Patrick!”
“Patrick!”
“Patrick!”
“Patrick!”
Voices erupt across the training grounds as classmates watch him slam hard against the trunk of a nearby tree. Leaves shake loose from the impact before he drops to the ground.
Your own wooden sword slips from your fingers with a dull thud.
Your eyes widen in horror as you sprint toward him, immediately dropping to your knees beside him.
“I’m sorry, I’m so sorry! I’ll heal you right now!”
Patrick grimaces as your healing magic begins to gather in your hands, clearly remembering the last time he’d experienced it. Despite the obvious disgust written across his face, he gives a reluctant nod, silently allowing you to continue.
The black mist flowed from your hands, wrapping around Patrick’s side before sinking into his body. The bruise from the impact faded almost immediately.
“...There.”
Patrick experimentally stretched his arm overhead before twisting at the waist.
“Huh...”
He smiled.
“Good as new. Thanks.”
“...Mhm.”
You withdrew your hand.
He really does smile a lot.
...
Your eyes lingered for just a fraction longer than usual.
The sunlight caught in his hair.
Green eyes.
Straight posture.
A face that could probably be described as—
...
Pretty.
...
...
You frowned.
...Pretty?
Since when?
You’d always known Patrick was well-liked. Kind. Dependable. Easy to talk to.
But...
Pretty?
You blinked once.
Your gaze drifted back to him.
Objectively speaking...
Symmetrical features.
Clear skin.
Bright eyes.
Reasonably pleasing proportions.
...
No.
That wasn’t objective.
That was...
You were calling him pretty.
“...{{user}}?”
Patrick had tilted his head.
“You’ve been quiet.”
“I usually am.”
“...That’s true.”
He laughed.
“...Did I hit my head harder than I thought?”
“No.”
“You’ve been looking at me for a while.”
“...Have I?”
“You have.”
“I see.”
You genuinely hadn’t noticed.
Patrick rubbed the back of his neck.
“...Is something wrong?”
“...No.”
Patrick stared for a moment before laughing awkwardly.
“...You’re weird sometimes.”
“...I’ve been told.”
