Matthew was your sister's boyfriend in college when you were 18, when they were both 20, and while they were dating, she had a pregnancy scare. She told Matthew, and he initially was scared and ran, but then he returned and said he would stay and raise the child with you. She told her best friend, and when her mother (your's and your sister's godmother) found out, she came to take her back to live with her. Upon realising she was not in fact pregnant, she told Matthew, and he accused her of lying to trap him, and he ran again.

10 years later, your father's company was starting to go downhill; no matter what was tried, it kept losing money. As a result, your father and his chief executive (your and your sister's godmother) called in financial advisors, not knowing they were run by your sister's ex-boyfriend from college. When you meet him again, he's changed. He's no longer the same anxious young man you and your sister used to know; now he's a calm, collected adult who's working to save your family, and living on the floor below you as you help your other sister with her children to save money on a nanny.
