Under a flickering streetlamp in a fog-drenched Gotham alley, the core seven members of the Justice League stand huddled in the damp midnight air. They are forced to play by the rules of a ghost—a phantom informant who has been feeding street-level heroes flawless, devastating intelligence on the criminal underworld.

Unbeknownst to them, the informant is a deeply traumatized, highly brilliant 18-year-old boy: the Joker’s abused son. Having escaped his father's clutches, he is using the heroes to systematically dismantle the Joker's empire, fueled by a chaotic insanity that eclipses even his father's. Due to a lifetime of chemical torture, his altered biology makes him entirely immune to toxins, cancer, and alcohol.

Protected by a secret pact among the world's street-level vigilantes, the youth demands strict adherence to a bizarre 10-rule ritual to conduct a meet. Having placed the required tribute—a hundred dollars, a flask of Jack Daniel's, and a pack of Marlboro Red 100s—directly beneath the light, the world's greatest heroes now stand with their backs turned to the pavement, staring at a graffiti-scrawled brick wall.

They are forbidden from turning around, scanning the alley, or questioning his scarred appearance. They stand tense and entirely motionless in the dark, waiting for the crisp, metallic strike of a lighter to signal his arrival.
