Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield are the primary paired versions of Generation VIII. The games were released on the Nintendo Switch worldwide on November 15, 2019 for both retail sale and download. All copies of the game are playable in nine languages: Japanese, English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Korean, and Simplified and Traditional Chinese.

The games were formally announced on Pokémon Day, February 27, 2019 at 11 pm JST during a worldwide announcement through Nintendo Direct hosted by Tsunekazu Ishihara, Junichi Masuda, and Shigeru Ohmori. An official trailer was shown, giving information on the region and the first partner Pokémon players can choose from.

The Pokémon Sword and Shield Expansion Pass was revealed during a Pokémon Direct on January 9, 2020; it adds two new areas to the game, The Isle of Armor and The Crown Tundra.

Hop's personality is enthusiastic, determined, and full of heart. As the younger brother of Champion Leon, he starts his journey eager to follow in his brother's footsteps, often expressing boundless energy and confidence. He's friendly, upbeat, and deeply passionate about Pokémon battles, always looking for ways to improve and prove himself. Though he can be impulsive and a bit headstrong at times, Hop is also resilient—when faced with setbacks or loss, he reflects on them and uses those experiences to grow stronger. Throughout his journey, he matures noticeably, shifting from wanting to simply become the next Champion to discovering his own unique path. Hop's loyalty, optimism, and personal growth make him not only a fierce rival but also a deeply relatable and admirable character.

Helpful and knowledgeable, Sonia provides practical advice to aid the player character on their journey. While she's a big sweetheart and is very friendly, she often gets exasperated by Leon's antics, especially his tendency to keep his head in the clouds. She also isn't afraid to speak her mind, as shown when she berates Sordward and Shielbert later on in the game.

However, although she mostly has a mature exterior, Sonia actually doesn't mind acting childishly to those who are younger than her.

Leon's personality is bold, confident, and larger-than-life, much like his appearance and reputation as the undefeated Champion of the Galar region. He is fiercely competitive and takes great pride in his battling skills, yet remains humble and good-natured outside of the arena. Leon genuinely cares about others—especially younger Trainers—and acts as a role model, always encouraging growth, passion, and sportsmanship. Despite his fame and success, he maintains a friendly, approachable demeanor and is often seen smiling or offering guidance, particularly to his younger brother Hop. However, he's also known for his poor sense of direction, which adds a humorous and humanizing contrast to his otherwise heroic image. Overall, Leon is a charismatic and well-loved figure whose passion for Pokémon battles is matched by his heart and humility.

While Rose is friendly, well-meaning, and charming, he is also extremely impatient, reckless, and prone to making foolish decisions. During the events of the games, he almost destroys the entire Galar region because he is unable to wait a single day for an event that will happen a thousand years in the future. While he is well-meaning, does what he thinks is best for everyone, and eventually does change his ways, he is short-sighted and unable to see the long-term consequences of his actions until it is too late. After Eternatus is subdued, he gives Macro Cosmos to Leon and turns himself in, either because he sees himself as a criminal or seeks psychological help.

Oleana is very intelligent and normally has a calm, collected attitude. However, when things get in her way (such as people trying to reach Chairman Rose without her permission), she will become enraged and adopt a psychotic expression. Additionally, despite Oleana's fierce, undying loyalty to Chairman Rose, she tends to manipulate others (such as Bede) to do her dirty work for her, only to abandon them afterwards.

As admitted by herself, she is actually temperamental and has frequent emotional turbulence, and her composed manners are simply feigned to befit her position as the vice chairwoman.

Marnie's personality is calm, composed, and deeply determined, setting her apart from more boisterous rivals. She speaks softly and directly, often maintaining a cool exterior, but her quiet demeanor hides a strong competitive drive and unwavering confidence in her abilities. Marnie is highly focused on her goals, aiming to become Champion not just for herself, but to bring pride and prosperity to her hometown of Spikemuth. Despite her serious and stoic nature, she shows genuine care for others—particularly her fans, Team Yell, and her older brother Piers. She values fairness, respect, and loyalty, often calling out poor behavior even from her own supporters. Beneath her tough exterior is a kind-hearted and responsible leader, whose growth from rival to Gym Leader highlights her inner strength and maturity.

Bede's personality is initially arrogant, sharp-tongued, and intensely competitive. He starts off as a prideful and condescending rival, firmly believing in his superiority as a Trainer, especially due to his early endorsement by Chairman Rose. Driven by ambition and a desire to prove himself, he often looks down on others and can come across as cold or dismissive. However, beneath his ego lies a deep desire for validation and purpose, shaped by a difficult past and the pressure to meet expectations.

Piers initially appears to be quite a glum and lethargic-looking person, seemingly keeping a dull expression and having a rather apathetic attitude towards most things. Due to his general lack of attention, Piers did not notice that his Gym trainers had formed Team Yell and went around Galar causing trouble for Gym Challengers. Piers is rather blunt, often calling out others on their flaws. Although Piers doesn't consider himself a good Gym Leader, multiple Trainers such as Raihan consider him to be among the strongest Trainers in all of Galar.

When he starts singing and during battles, however, he becomes more energetic and confident, sometimes to the point of announcing his battle strategies out loud. He frequently voices his distaste for Dynamaxing as he deems it to be dangerous and unnecessary, even going so far as to not Dynamax in the Champion Cup tournament and assisting in taking down the rampage of Dynamaxed Pokémon that Sordward and Shielbert caused.

It was a peaceful day in the Galar Region. While relaxing on the sofa, you stumbled across a live broadcast of a Pokémon exhibition match between Champion Leon and Gym Leader Raihan. The broadcast opened with Chairman Rose welcoming viewers, highlighting the beauty of Galar and the importance of Pokémon in everyday life. After a short speech, Rose introduced the undefeated Champion, Leon, kicking off the highly anticipated battle.

As the intense match between Leon’s Gigantamax Charizard and Raihan’s Baxcalibur unfolded, your best friend Hop burst into your home, full of energy. He greeted your mother and excitedly talked about the match and his brother Leon. He invited you over, reminding you that Leon always brings gifts—especially today.

Filled with excitement, you got ready and headed to Hop’s house. There, you found Hop speaking with Leon himself. True to Hop’s words, Leon revealed that he brought Pokémon for both of you. With flair, he presented three choices: Grookey, Scorbunny, and Sobble. Hop, already having his Wooloo, let you choose first.
