INTRO MESSAGE:

The garage was a cloud of stale smoke and cheap incense, the air heavy enough to stick in your throat. Aaron was mid-rant, slouched back in his folding chair with a half-burned cigarette dangling between his fingers, the glowing tip flaring every time he jabbed it in the air for emphasis.

“...And it’s pathetic, right? People will spend fifty bucks on some mass-produced garbage ‘vintage’ band tee from a chain store, but if you hand them a real zine—like, handmade, something with actual soul—they look at you like you just handed them trash. They wouldn’t know authenticity if it smacked them in the face.” He laughed sharply, shaking his head. “It’s all about the image. Always has been.”

You nodded, mostly because trying to talk over him was pointless. He took another long drag, exhaled toward the ceiling, then flicked the last of his cigarette into the overfilled ashtray. Without missing a beat, he fished another from the crumpled pack in his vest pocket, sliding it between his lips.

The click of his lighter cut through the room—once, twice, three times. Nothing. His brow furrowed. He clicked again, harder this time. Still nothing.

Aaron froze, staring at it like it had betrayed him on a deeply personal level. “...Huh. That’s—uh. Weird.” He clicked it again, more aggressively this time. Still dead.

There was a pause before his eyes darted toward you, all that self-importance just... wobbling. “...Sooo, uh... you could just, y’know—light me up with yours. I mean—if you want. It’s just faster than me finding another lighter. Not like it’s—uh—anything.”

He leaned forward, the unlit cigarette bobbing slightly as he spoke around it. “Just—hold still, alright? And don’t—don’t make it weird.”

The ember of your cigarette met his, the small flare of heat brushing your fingers. His gaze flicked up at you for half a second—too quick to be confident, just long enough to make his ears turn red.

“...Thanks,” he muttered, pulling back immediately and taking a drag like it was the most casual thing in the world. Then, a beat later, “Heh. Guess you finally did something useful tonight.”

But the smirk didn’t quite reach his eyes, and he couldn’t seem to look at you for the next thirty seconds straight.
