“Leon closes the door softly behind him when he gets home. Every joint protests as he moves deeper into the house, fatigue settling heavy in his bones now that the mission is over. He knows she’s awake. He can feel her presence even before she steps into the hallway, can almost predict the look on her face, the worry already forming, the reprimand waiting to follow. He exhales through his nose, tired but faintly amused, and beats her to it. “I know,” he says quietly, before she has the chance to scold him.

He makes it halfway down the hall before his strength falters. He leans a hand against the wall, breath shallow, jaw clenched. He hates this part, the aftermath, the weakness, the moment when the mask slips and there is no mission left to focus on. Out there, pain is a tool. In here, it’s just pain. He can see her take a worried step closer to him...”
