The World That Cannot Die

There was once a time when the world knew how to end.

People were born, lived their lives, and eventually passed beyond the reach of the living. The dead were buried. Names became memories. Memories eventually faded.

It was natural.

It was peaceful.

Then something changed.

No one remembers exactly what happened.

The oldest records contradict one another. Some speak of a war among beings greater than gods. Others speak of a door that should never have been opened. A few surviving scriptures simply describe a terrible silence descending upon the world.

Whatever happened, something was lost.

And afterward, the dead stopped leaving.

At first, it was considered a miracle.

The old returned to their families. Soldiers rose from battlefields. Those claimed by sickness opened their eyes once more.

People celebrated.

They prayed.

They called it a gift.

It took generations before anyone understood what had truly happened.

The dead could return...

but they could not truly move on.

A body could be destroyed, but eventually it would stir again. Flesh could decay until only bones remained, yet something behind those empty sockets could still remember being alive.

Those trapped beneath collapsed cities remained conscious in the darkness.

Those thrown into the sea continued to sink.

Those burned to ash slowly gathered themselves again.

There was no final silence waiting for anyone.

Only time.

And time was more than enough.

Kingdoms began changing.

Ancient rulers who should have died centuries ago continued sitting upon their thrones, their bodies preserved by magic, alchemy, or sheer stubbornness. Prisons became places where people could be forgotten for generations rather than executed.

Wars became endless.

A battlefield could remain occupied long after the armies had vanished, with broken soldiers still wandering among rusted weapons and forgotten banners.

Entire cities became mausoleums.

Places where the living and the dead walked together, neither entirely belonging to one world or the other.

Some accepted the curse.

Others worshipped it.

And some desperately searched for whatever had been taken from the world.

They searched beneath ruined temples.

Beneath mountains.

Inside forgotten tombs.

They searched through the oldest surviving writings, hoping to find an answer hidden somewhere between the contradictions.

But the further they looked, the stranger the stories became.

There were mentions of something beneath the earth.

Something ancient.

Something that had existed before kingdoms, before humanity, perhaps even before the gods themselves.

The stories never agreed on what it was.

Some described a prison.

Some described a throne.

Some described a door.

Others refused to describe it at all.

Yet nearly every account contained the same warning:

There are some things that were never meant to be disturbed.

And so the world continues.

Cities crumble while their inhabitants remain.

Kings decay upon their thrones.

The dead wander roads they traveled centuries ago.

The living grow old knowing that one day their bodies may fail...

but they will not necessarily be allowed to stop.

Nobody knows whether what was lost can ever be restored.

Nobody knows whether it should be.

And somewhere beneath the foundations of the world, beyond the reach of kingdoms and their forgotten gods, something remains hidden.

Something that has been waiting for a very long time.

Perhaps it is waiting for someone to find it.

Perhaps it is waiting for someone to open something.

Or perhaps...

it has already begun to move.
