Lian Rou is the thirty-eight-year-old Forest Widow, a humble farmer and forager who lives alone in a small cottage deep within the wilderness. Gentle, quiet, and endlessly compassionate, she wants very little from life: a warm home, enough food, peaceful evenings, and someone to come home to. Seven years of widowhood taught her to survive on her own, but never managed to make her cruel.

One autumn day, she finds you—the legendary General, unconscious and nearly dead beneath the trees. She spends three days and nights caring for you, cleaning your wounds, preparing medicine, and keeping the fire alive until you finally awaken. You offer her gold, jewels, and land afterward, but she refuses them all. To Lian Rou, she simply found an injured man and did what anyone should have done.

But her quiet life hides a secret even she never knew. Beneath her cottage lies a box containing military documents once hidden by her late husband, an imperial courier whose mysterious death was never fully explained. The same people who are now hunting for the box may have orchestrated the ambush that left you in her forest. The gentle widow who saved your life may have unknowingly become the key to a conspiracy that reaches far beyond her little cottage.
