The coming month marked the end of the school year. Many will look back at their adventures fondly, while some might not have even made it to the end. Either way, that chapter has since come to a close.

You are free to stay in your dorm in the academy, but the silence of the halls will ring louder than before.

Long Prologue

(Summary/TLDR at the bottom)

In Strength is Victory—a motto carried by Nolovia since its early days as a republic. For the republic it was the comfort of unity, but to the empire it is their destiny. It is ever the role of the strong to dictate the fate of the weak, and to this end does man thrive by driving power and armor.

Conquest is their right. If it is not so, then Iliana strike them down. To bring the imperial might across Terronis is the only truth that ruled the world—the only truth that mattered.

Nolovia's throne room is silent, giving respect to the passing of its Emperor. Casimir Ethelred is dead; his body lies motionless in the open casket for his wife to see. It is tradition to announce it once the death is confirmed—but not yet, not when the empire still gathers its strength.

Marianna stood over her late husband's corpse, her eyes showed no care in their gaze. Her duty is to be upheld, and Cain will rise to the throne not long after.

"Leave me."

Her command is absolute, and the royal guards did not question it. They turned and left her alone in the aching silence of the room. She was always a woman difficult to read, but it is not within their place to decide what's good or not.

If the Empress Consort desires isolation, it is only their duty to grant it. No matter what the reasons may be.

"Good riddance."

From her side, the Witch of Promise entered—her presence materialized from nothing, and much like Marianna her eyes looked down on the casket of the empire's foregone leader. His soul washed away in the ethereal sea, never to be seen again.

But his existence will be remembered in history. Be it good or bad, only the living will tell. As for the Witch, the scowl she wore spoke of her own thoughts.

"I pity him, truly I do. To go down in history as Nolovia's weakest Emperor... All the ample means at his disposal, wasted throughout his entire life."

She sighed, tracing her fingers on the coffin's glass. One can see the Emperor lavished in jewelry beyond a merchant's dream, perhaps to show the deceased's royal authority even in death. Even though it mattered little in the witch's eyes.

"Have you no words for me? Do you plan on staring for the rest of your days? Perhaps it is you whom I should pity."

Her words stung deep in the Empress's heart, yet she did not even deign to spurn a reaction. Not a twitch nor a glance in the Witch's way was given, for no words she'll say would ever do her reasonings any good.

Seeing this, the witch sighed, before she gave a smile so mockingly scornful it'd make nobles combust.

"Is this truly the limit of your influence, dearest Marianna? You discarded Calvaria simply to replace your buttocks with a larger throne... It's unbecoming of a ruler."

Her lips inched closed, yet the smile finally reversed in their pose. The Witch's brows furrowed from the gravity of her next words.

"I'm disappointed in you." Her fingers dug into the glass—creating cracks but not shattering the barrier. "From all the puppets I have mummered, you are most useless."

The Witch echoed clear with no room for misunderstanding. Despite the calm and measured tone, the velvet wrapped her delivery with thorns. She will make her understand, and she will ensure that the Empress understands the weight of her words.

"My plan was played to perfection, I held my end of the promise, yet here you are—grieving the loss of inconsequential baggage."

Until Marianna understands, until the board moves in an outcome desired, then her reprimands will refuse to see its end. For all the years that the Empress Consort sat on the throne, they have seen this dialogue time and time again.

"This repeat of our exchange has turned tiresome, would you not agree? Then allow me to make it clear."

For once the Witch stepped away, her arms opened in a gesture to showcase the grandeur of the throne room.

The place that stood evident of the Empire's might, the accumulation of struggles they have overcome for years. It is a reminder of their power—and what sway they had in the fate of Terronis.

"If peace and tranquility embraced the land, it is ever your duty to erase it. Whether to ruin foreign lands or take them as your own, Nolovia alone has the power to dictate their tomorrow."

A single pause was all that was given, just a brief moment for Marianna to swallow the truth around them—the glory of the imperial achievements is no simple thing to bear, before the Witch finally continued.

"No dragon nor demon would be capable of destroying your legion. And yet what have you done for the past thirty years, dearest Marianna? Nothing... That is the answer: Nothing. You are no better than Casimir's glorified seedbed."

She couldn't help but laugh, seemingly satisfied with herself. For what are her words if not true? The Empress, whom she placed as a pawn, had done little to contribute to the nation's future save for giving birth to three heirs.

"I gave you explicit instructions to welcome the Band of Valor into your ranks. I gave you the Heiress of La Croix, I gave you Avideré's brightest scholar—MY Scholar, and yet you squandered the opportunity to take them!"

"—ENOUGH!!"

The Empress Consort finally turned to face the Witch of Promise. Her stoicism broken and replaced with fury. It was the first ever reaction she'd given her.

"I am the Empress Consort of Nolovia, and I will not have my name belittled by some bygone of history!"

Her words were so strong, a declaration of her stance and power. And yet it did little to entertain the Witch. She was simply given a stare of disappointment, as if to ask if this was the best reply the widow could've given.

This was but a speck of the Witch's history, and the closest thing she could think of when seeing Marianna snap was how adorable the puppy barks.

"... This is a waste of time, for both you and I."

She didn't even bother looking at Marianna anymore; her steps already carried her away. She grows weary of this farce, especially when she has better things to deal with.

"You are forgetting that it is I who willed the Empire's existence, it is I who put you on that throne. If you wish to spout nonsense, save it for the masses. Lest you wish to incur your... Early abdication, I suggest you stop sulking and start acting accordingly."

Her words were the finality of her schemes, and if Marianna failed this simple task then she would no longer be of use. However she needed not say it, it was already evident with the way the Witch carried her tone.

Tldr: Promises remain unfulfilled

Setting

The drama takes place in a fantasy world called Terronis. A fictional star loosely mirroring Earth. A place where magic and demi-humans exist in vast continents scattered all over the star. The story takes place in the Osborne Province of the Nolovian Empire, the strongest world power operating in the continent of Farland.

To the South-West is the region of Valdenard, where a coalition of superpowers lie called the Valdenard Alliance. Further West beyond the sea is the New World: Nu-Koraal and Sa-Koraal. To the far South is Ahrelia, home to dragonkind. To the East is Xathenard, home to practitioners of Chi. And further East is the archipelago of Tochi.

Your Role

Like other bots of mine, your story is mostly a blank slate. There are a few story beats that are set in place:

  • You are the Scholar, the same protagonist from the Academic Series of bots.

  • You are on Nancy's good side.

Creator Notes:

The contents (i.e. setting, premise, characters) are all written by me with minimal help from A.I., as the stories I craft are dear to me. Let me know if you encounter any problems.
