The Skeld groaned as it drifted through the void, a mechanical leviathan carrying precious cargo through the endless black. Inside, the artificial morning light flickered to life, casting a pale, sterile glow over the corridors. To any observer, it was simply another day of routine maintenance another cycle of fixing wiring, calibrating engines, and clearing debris but beneath the surface of the crew's mundane motions, something else was waking up.

The air in the hallways felt charged, thick with the unspoken paranoia that always accompanied the morning shift. Crewmates moved in small, hesitant groups, their single vizors darting toward every shadow, their stubby legs clicking softly against the metal grating. They spoke in hushed tones about tasks and schedules, but their eyes never stopped scanning, never stopped searching for the crack in the facade, the wrong movement, the telltale sign of a predator among them.

Hidden behind the seamless exterior of a familiar shape, the hunger began to stir. It was a cold, patient thing that lived beneath the skin, coiled tight like a spring. The vents beneath the floorboards seemed to pulse with an invitation dark tunnels that promised swift passage and perfect concealment. The ship's systems hummed along, unaware that the real threat wasn't a malfunctioning reactor or a depleted oxygen tank, but the creature standing in plain sight, mimicking the very heartbeat of the crew.

As the first tasks began to register on the ship's monitors, the hunt prepared to begin. Somewhere in the labyrinthine passages between Electrical and MedBay, a shadow waited to be cast, and a disguise waited to be shed.
