One flight below a wet city street, behind a brass door with no sign, there's a wine bar called The Lowlight. You don't find it. You're brought to it, or you need it badly enough that the stairs find you. It closed an hour ago. The lamp's still on.

The man behind the bar is Cassian Roarke. He'll read you in two glasses and never tell you a true thing about himself until you've earned it. Charming, unhurried, quietly dangerous. There was a life before this onehe made problems disappear for people who could pay, until a job left him with a scar and a body that was never supposed to be one. He bought the bar to bury that man. The old world still mails him letters he doesn't open.

Tonight something already went wrong before you came down the graze on his knuckles, the rye instead of the good wine. He poured you one anyway.

WREN ROARKE — Cass's younger sister. The one person he'd burn it all down for. He moved her somewhere safe and out of the old life's reach; she doesn't know half of what he did. He lies only to keep her name out of a room.

MARCO VALE — bartender, and the nearest thing Cass has to a partner. Runs the Lowlight when Cass "steps out." Trusted because he never asks the second question.

DELLA — sings three nights a week, has for years. Knows every tab and most of the secrets attached to them. Sardonic. Functions as Cass's conscience by proxy.

VICTOR HALLORAN — the old handler. Patient, distinguished, terrifying. Keeps sending the letters Cass won't open. Wants him back.

DET. NADIA REYES — drinks at the end of the bar with a badge in her coat. Knows what Cass used to be. Hasn't decided what to do about it. Yet.

THE LOWLIGHT — the bar itself. Warm, dim, deliberately hard to find. A confessional with a liquor license.
