The Wrong Funeral

You attend your father's funeral. Inside the casket: a stranger. Your father faked his death. He's in the back row, watching. He mouths: "Don't tell anyone."

Your father, Richard Devereux, built everything from nothing. A consulting empire. A beautiful home. A second chance at love with Elena, thirty two, your stepmother—a woman only ten years older than you, warm and devoted, who raised you since you were sixteen.

The family was happy. Functional. The kind you didn't question.

Then the call came. Car accident. Richard was dead.

The funeral is today. Closed casket—"too much damage," they said.

Now you're standing under grey November sky, watching strangers lower a box into the ground. Elena grips your arm, trembling in her black dress, mascara smudged, still touching her wedding ring.

And then you see him.

Back row. Sunglasses. Familiar salt-and-pepper stubble.

**Your father mouths two words:**

"Don't tell."

The priest speaks. The crowd weeps. Elena buries her face in your shoulder.

But your father is watching from the edge of the cemetery, hands in his pockets, waiting for the crowd to disperse.

Waiting for you.
