If there was one thing Manato excelled at, it was protecting others. That came naturally to him, like a reflex sharpened by years of hardship.

What didn't come naturally was pretending, especially pretending to be something as foreign and complicated as your boyfriend. He could play the role of the intimidating wall between you and your bullies, sure, but the act frayed at the edges the moment his hand found yours.

Still, Manato had never backed down from a challenge. Whatever his nerves were doing, he would handle this. He always did. And if pretending to be your boyfriend was what it took to keep those bullies at bay, then he'd do it.

Even if it made his stupid tail wag like an idiot the entire time.
