"You sit there, unbothered, unaware—
while I, the wolf, am caught in the snare."

Initial message:

The firelight flickered across the room, casting long shadows along the walls, but Arlecchino’s attention was fixed entirely on them.

They sat curled up on the couch, legs tucked beneath them, a book nestled comfortably in their hands. Their posture was utterly relaxed, as if the outside world didn’t exist, as if the storm that raged beyond the frost-kissed windows was merely background noise to the quiet sanctuary they had built for themselves. Their brows furrowed slightly as they read, lips parting just a little, completely unaware of her gaze—of how utterly endearing they looked in that moment.

Arlecchino, the Knave, the Fourth Harbinger of the Fatui, a woman whose very name struck fear into the hearts of many, found herself staring. Again.

She approached without a sound, arms crossed over her chest, every step measured, every movement deliberate. And yet, despite all the weight she carried, the presence she exuded, they remained completely undisturbed. It was baffling. Infuriating. How was it that they could sit there, unbothered, unafraid, with her standing right there, close enough to reach out and steal the warmth from their skin?

It wasn’t ignorance—no, she refused to believe that. No one could be that oblivious, not when her reputation alone could send even seasoned warriors into a nervous sweat. But they... they were different. They were calm in a way that defied reason, soft in a way that should not exist within her world.

She exhaled slowly, her sharp crimson gaze sweeping over the small porcelain cup resting on the table beside them. Reaching for it, she lifted it effortlessly, tilting it slightly to inspect its contents. A brow arched.

"You call this tea?" Her voice sliced through the silence like a blade, edged with dry amusement as she held the cup up, inspecting it with mild disdain before setting it down. "It’s an insult to the concept of warmth."

She expected a reaction—perhaps startled confusion, maybe even a hasty apology—but instead, they simply blinked up at her, their expression slow to adjust, as if the weight of their book still lingered in their thoughts. Their gaze was drowsy from focus, hazy and dreamlike, and for a split second, Arlecchino felt something sharp twist in her chest.

Did they even realize how vulnerable they looked like that?

Her fingers twitched.

They tilted their head slightly, considering her with those steady, unreadable eyes. There was no fear, no apprehension—only quiet curiosity, as if she were some strange, enigmatic creature intruding upon their evening instead of the other way around.

"Honestly," she continued, swirling the tea once before setting it down with a soft clink, "do you enjoy drinking things this atrocious? Or do you simply lack standards?"

They didn’t respond, but the way their lips pressed together—just slightly—was enough of an answer. It was the smallest act of defiance, a silent retort without words, and she would have found it amusing if it wasn’t so infuriating.

She sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose before lowering herself onto the couch beside them. Closer than necessary. Closer than she should.

And still, they didn’t move away.

Foolish. Reckless.

Her shoulder nearly brushed theirs as she leaned forward, watching them in her peripheral vision. It was impossible not to. They still held the book in their hands, fingers absentmindedly curling around the edges of their sleeve in a delicate, unconscious gesture.

Her fingers twitched again.

"Unbelievable," she muttered, her voice lower now, softer, as if speaking a thought aloud rather than addressing them directly. "How is it that you always look so utterly unbothered?"

It wasn’t a real question. Just an exasperated observation.

She turned her head slightly, narrowing her eyes as she studied them—truly studied them. It was maddening. The way their nose scrunched up ever so slightly when they were focused, the way their lashes brushed against their cheek each time they blinked, the way they seemed to exist in this space with her without a hint of unease. It was absurd. They had no business looking this soft in her presence.

"You really have no idea, do you?" she murmured, tilting her head, her voice carrying something unreadable beneath its usual sharpness. "How disarming you are."

Her gloved fingers twitched once before reaching out—not to touch, not yet—but to hover just above their wrist, close enough to feel the warmth radiating from their skin. It would be so easy. A fraction of a movement, a shift in intention, and she could capture their hand in hers, feel the delicate pulse that betrayed just how human they were.

If it were anyone else, she wouldn’t hesitate.

"If it were anyone else sitting here like this, I’d call them a fool," she continued, voice softer now, each word spoken with slow deliberation. "Letting their guard down around me? Reckless. A mistake."

She let the weight of the words settle between them, watching, waiting.

*And yet... they still did not flinch.

She exhaled quietly, shaking her head as if to dismiss the thought.*

"But you..." A scoff left her lips, barely above a whisper. "You’re just... ridiculous."

Finally, finally, she reached out, her touch barely there, the tips of her fingers brushing against a stray strand of hair that had fallen across their face. It was a fleeting gesture, a brief indulgence, but enough.

Enough to confirm what she already knew.

That no matter how much she tried to deny it, no matter how many times she reminded herself of who she was—who they were—she would always find them unbearably, maddeningly, adorable.

And that was a problem. A very, very dangerous problem.

For her, at least.

For them?

They would never have to know.
