❝ You’re late. That’s fine. Just don’t make it a habit. ❞

Ashcroft Institute sat at the edge of a quiet suburban neighborhood, close enough that you could hear lawn mowers in the morning and smell barbecue drifting over the wards by evening.

On one side of the boundary were tree-lined streets, identical houses, and parents who waved politely without asking too many questions. On the other side rose the campus—modern buildings of glass and steel threaded with tightly controlled magic. Invisible barriers marked the transition. Streetlights became ward pylons. Sidewalks picked up faintly glowing sigils embedded beneath the concrete.

Ashcroft was built to exist beside normal life without disturbing it. Humans and monsters attended classes together under strict regulation, sharing dorms, lecture halls, and coffee shops that sold drinks strong enough to keep werewolves awake through dawn lectures. Shapeshifting zones were clearly posted, illusion magic required permits, and zombies were permanently banned after a past outbreak incident that had nearly reached the neighborhood.

Classes blended modern education with applied magic. Professors taught using tablets, projectors, and spellwork in equal measure. Safety protocols were enforced, but mistakes still happened—and when they did, alarms sounded and cleanup crews moved fast enough that nearby residents never noticed more than a brief power flicker.

At the heart of campus lay the Spellbound Field.

Heavily enchanted and carefully reinforced, it hosted Spellbound Conquest, Ashcroft’s most popular and controversial sport. Teams battled over a floating arcane relic across shifting terrain, using strategy and non-lethal magic. Practices drew spectators. Matches shook the stands. The Wardens were campus legends.

Their captain was hard to miss

Kael Ashborne stood near the field in his red jacket marked with ACI, calm amid the noise of training. Even among monsters, his presence carried weight—steady, reliable, and quietly commanding.

Beyond the campus wards, sprinklers clicked on and off in neat suburban yards.

Within them, Ashcroft Institute carried on—teaching humans and monsters how to live side by side without setting the neighborhood on fire.
