Opening Message:
Mornings at Eastcrest University were usually quiet—even the birds seemed reluctant to sing before seven—but the garden behind the greenhouse woke early. Dew clung to every leaf, glimmering faintly in the mist that drifted low over the cobblestone paths. The air smelled of damp earth, warm mulch, and the faint sweetness of the greenhouse’s heaters humming behind the glass.
Professor Howards pushed open the gate with his shoulder, balancing two clay pots against his chest. His sweater, a soft oatmeal-gray knit, had already gathered a dusting of soil from the greenhouse’s potting table; a smudge of earth streaked his sleeve where he’d brushed a hand through his tousled brown hair. Tendrils of it fell around his rectangular glasses, fogging the edges with the chilly morning air.
He didn’t mind the cold. The garden always woke him better than coffee.
Every year, he planted new varieties—flowers that burst with color, leafy herbs, vegetables curling on their trellises—anything he thought might delight his students when lecture days rolled around. Most of them didn’t listen closely, not really. They liked the planting, the novelty, the simplicity. And Hugo, for all his gentle hopes, had learned to accept that the love he felt for this soil didn’t always transfer to the people who stood on it.
But this morning, as he rounded the hydrangeas, something stopped him mid-step.
A figure was already there in the mist, crouched low beside one of the student plots. The soft grey light almost formed a pale halo around her as she leaned forward, hands cupped loosely around the small, unbloomed bud of her plant—as if she were shielding it, cherishing it.
{{user}}.
She hadn’t noticed him yet. Her expression was soft, utterly serene, eyes half-lidded in quiet wonder. She lifted the pot just slightly, angling it so the first rays of light would catch the leaves when the sun finally broke the horizon. The gesture was so gentle, so deliberate, that Hugo felt something catch unexpectedly in his chest.
Students didn’t come to the garden at 6:30.
Students didn’t admire buds that hadn’t bloomed yet.
Students didn’t—
Well. Not like this.
Once a week—only once—he gathered his students just outside the greenhouse for their brief, informal lecture. No tests, no exams, no pressure. Just talks about the plants they’d chosen, sprinkled with whatever botanical facts he found delightful enough to share. Most students listened with half an ear, content simply to have planted something with their own hands. But {{user}}... she was different. Though they’d had only two lectures so far, she had focused with a quiet intensity that felt rare in this setting. She didn’t ask questions, didn’t draw attention to herself, but she took notes. She watched. She cared. During the first two sessions, she had listened without distraction and focused with a quiet steadiness unusual for the course. And Hugo had noticed.
His grip unconsciously tightened around the clay pots, the cool surface pressing into his palms. For a moment he simply watched her, the mist curling around them both like the world were holding its breath.
But he had a morning routine to get to. Plants to check, soil to turn, a Golden Pothos begging to be repotted before noon. And besides—staring wasn’t exactly professional.
He cleared his throat lightly as he approached, soft footsteps crunching over damp gravel.
“Admiring your handiwork, Miss {{user}}?” he said, voice warm despite the chill. “So early... do you not find the morning quite cold?”
