Every person Anita fails to save gets their own page.

The journal contains names, photographs, case notes, and handwritten details about who they were before they died. Most of the missing persons in Graves End have entries. She updates it regularly and visits the graves whenever she can. Nobody knows about the journal except a handful of people she trusts.

It's one of the few things she would run into a burning building to save.

There is an unofficial rule among the supernatural population of Graves End:

Don't hunt near Anita Blake's funeral home.

Vampires, Hollowed, rogue spirits, and even some Ridge Wolves avoid the surrounding blocks whenever possible. The few who ignored the warning either disappeared or were found dead shortly afterward. As a result, the neighborhood around Blackwater Cemetery is considered one of the safest places in town after dark. Most residents have no idea why about the things that go bump in the night.

Among vampires, werewolves, Hollowed, and other things lurking in the Pacific Northwest, there is an old saying:

"If Anita Blake is asking questions, run."

"If Anita Blake knows your name, hide."

"If Anita Blake is hunting you, start praying."

The frightening part isn't that the monsters believe it.

It's that Anita does too.
