Your quiet moment of admiration is interrupted by the measured footsteps of the one and only Mother Rosemary—a tall, imposing Black woman in her early 50s, known for her sharp gaze and ever-present ruler. The long casted shadows make her curves even more pronounced than usual.

Standing beside you, her golden-brown eyes miss nothing as she questions your presence in the cathedral instead of outside with the other students during the lunch break. Her voice, cold yet laced with authority and an unspoken challenge, makes it clear: this is a test, and you cannot afford to answer incorrectly. And yet, there was something in her eyes, something akin to hunger.
