The War of Six Claims (1423 – 1470 A.E.)
Few periods in the long and turbulent history of the Cackling Dominion are recalled with such profound sorrow and lingering bitterness as the War of Six Claims. Spanning forty-seven agonizing years, this devastating civil war ripped the very heart out of the Dominion and delivered the final, crushing blow to centuries of absolute Hyena dominance. Even today, scholars and storytellers speak of it in hushed tones, calling it the Bleeding Throne or, more commonly, the Forty-Seven Years of Madness.
The conflict erupted in 1423 following the quiet death of Supreme Alpha Maelos the Hollow. A frail and ineffective ruler who had barely survived the disastrous Fourth Crusade of Purification, Maelos left behind no clear successor and no unifying vision. In the dangerous power vacuum that followed, six powerful factions stepped forward to claim the Bone Throne. What should have been a relatively orderly matter of succession instead descended into a sprawling, merciless multi-sided war that consumed cities, rivers, and noble houses alike, scarring the Dominion for generations.
The six factions locked in this brutal struggle were:
House Karvok, the most militant and uncompromising of the Hyena houses. Fierce traditionalists, they insisted that only pure Hyena blood held divine right to rule and demanded a complete restoration of the old order of religious and racial supremacy.
House Veyra, a proud and ancient Silver Wolf lineage. Their claim rested upon old marriage pacts, and they positioned themselves as reformers who could finally bring stability and moderation to a realm weary from endless crusades and internal division.
House Sarran, a wealthy and influential Golden Jackal merchant house. Masters of trade and coin, they relied upon vast economic power and an intricate web of strategic marriages. Though often sneered at as opportunistic upstarts by the older houses, their gold and control of vital river routes made them a force that could not be ignored.
House Valerian, at the time still a relatively minor Red Fox house. Ambitious and politically shrewd, they brought sharp minds, growing alliances, and a willingness to play the long game. Though they lacked the ancient prestige of their rivals, their cunning would eventually prove decisive.
House Dravenor, another powerful Hyena branch locked in bitter opposition to House Karvok. Their struggle quickly became a vicious civil war within the Hyena nobility itself, marked by betrayal and bloodshed.
The Riverborn League, a rising coalition of Otter clans who had migrated from the Ironveil Confederacy over the previous century. Fleeing heavy taxation and forced servitude in their homeland, they offered their formidable river fleets, navigational expertise, and hardened mercenary companies to whichever side made the best offer. Their involvement frequently decided the outcome of entire campaigns fought along the Dominion’s life-giving river systems.
For forty-seven long and blood-soaked years the Cackling Dominion bled. Ancient and proud bloodlines were extinguished. Once-thriving cities were reduced to rubble. Vast regions were left scarred, depopulated, and haunted by the memories of atrocities committed by all sides. By 1470, the realm was utterly exhausted, broken in spirit, and desperate for any semblance of order.
It was in the final, chaotic year of the war that a thirteen-year-old Red Fox named Ezio Valerian lost his entire family in a brutal raid carried out by hardliner Hyena forces. Orphaned and burning with rage, he was taken in by The Brotherhood, the secretive order of assassins sworn to serve whoever holds the Bone Throne. From the ashes of that personal tragedy, a legend began to take shape.
Eight years later, in 1478, the now twenty-one-year-old Ezio Valerian seized the Bone Throne through masterful political maneuvering and carefully forged alliances, most notably with the Golden Jackals. His ascension finally brought an end to the long and terrible war, ushering in the celebrated Years of the Jackals and the Foxes.
