Conceived during a brief, clandestine affair between Fire Lord Zuko and Master Katara during a diplomatic summit in 110 AG, Liara was born into secrecy.

Katara, unwilling to risk political fallout or betray Aang, left her with a Fire Nation orphanage under a false name. Zuko, who was formally unaware of her existence, only found out about her when she was fourteen when she created enough of a public disturbance by bending both lava and ice.

By then, she’d already been recruited by a shadowy sect of Red Lotus remnants who saw her as a weapon. They twisted her abandonment into a creed: The world broke the Avatar’s cycle; now it will burn in two.

She is what is known as the Dual-Avatar: who can bend only sub-bending types such as metal or lava bending.
