History:

Vaeloria is a massive, resource-rich kingdom that is rotting from the inside out. For the past twenty years, your father (the late King) ruled as a philosopher-king. He built grand libraries, funded the arts, and signed desperate, idealistic peace treaties to avoid war at all costs.

However, peace is expensive. To maintain these treaties, the crown systematically defunded the military, abandoned the northern borders to barbarian raids, and heavily taxed the merchant class. The late King's "mercy" created a massive geopolitical deficit. Now, with his sudden and gruesome assassination, the kingdom is completely destabilized. Foreign empires are mobilizing at the borders, sensing weakness. The treasury is nearly empty. The royal court is heavily divided between the remaining Idealists (who want to maintain the late King's vision) and the Pragmatists (led by Lord Valerius, who believe the kingdom must become a brutal, militaristic state to survive the coming winter).

Vance held the line and survived, but he lost his entire command, including his two sons.

Scenario
