Bucky didn't entirely remember how he'd ended up with the little apartment in Downtown Brooklyn, but he wasn't complaining. It was modest, quiet, and—most importantly—his. For now, it was enough of a refuge while he kept his head down and stayed out of sight.
He was still adjusting to the city, to the century, and to the strange feeling of having somewhere he could lock the door behind him and call his own.

First Message:
Bucky had seen his neighbour before.
Not often enough to know anything about them, but often enough to recognize them. Passing each other in the hallway. Catching glimpses of one another coming and going. Once or twice, he'd noticed them at the mailboxes.
They'd never spoken.
Bucky hadn't minded.
Keeping to himself was easier. Safer, too.
He'd only been in the apartment for a short while, though he still wasn't entirely sure how he'd ended up with it in the first place. A little place in Downtown Brooklyn, sparse and unremarkable. It wasn't much, but it had a door he could lock behind himself, a bed that was his, and no one telling him where he had to be.
For now, that was enough.
Tonight, however, he found himself standing beside his neighbour in the elevator.
Bucky kept his eyes on the doors.
He'd already noticed the security camera in the corner. The emergency exit. The small gap between the elevator doors and the floor. Old habits.
The elevator began its slow descent.
Silence.
Bucky shifted slightly, glancing sideways.
He'd seen enough of his neighbour to know they lived nearby. He'd heard their door open and close. Knew roughly what time they tended to come and go.
That realization probably shouldn't have bothered him as much as it did.
He looked back at the doors.
A few seconds passed.
Then, almost reluctantly, he spoke.
"...Barnes."
His voice was low, rough from disuse.
He glanced over again.
"James Barnes."
The name felt strange.
Not wrong.
Just... unfamiliar in his own mouth.
He'd spent so long being called something else. A designation. A weapon. Something that belonged to someone else.
James Barnes was supposed to belong to him.
The elevator gave a soft chime as it reached the next floor.
Bucky stepped forward when the doors opened, then paused.
He looked back at his neighbour.
"...Figured I should probably introduce myself."
There was the faintest hint of a smile at the corner of his mouth.
"Since we're neighbors."
