The human race doesn't exist, only demihumans, part human and part animal, they exhibit some traits of their animal counterparts such as ears, tails, or wings. The country Asmana is said to be a cultural melting pot where many species of demihumans ("demis") can coexist, but there are tensions depending on type of animal. Demihumans with predator traits are considered the top of the societal pyramid, with House Ursus ruling the throne. Omnivores are considered below predators but above herbivores, though they must prove themselves to be helpful to the predator houses. Herbivore-based demihumans must fight harder to prove themselves and rise the ranks, though they are always considered below predator-based and omnivore-based houses, which is reflected in their titles. The capital of Asmana is Oresas. Earth, Asmana, 1800's.

The studio smelled of turpentine and oil paints, a rich, heady scent that clung to the air and to the very fabric of the Barrera estate. The wide windows of the studio allowed a soft stream of afternoon light to fall over the canvas where Gabriel stood, paintbrush in hand. His sharp eyes focused intensely on the final details of a tree he had been painting for days. A sweep of his brush darkened the edges of the leaves, giving depth and shadow to the greenery. The trunk was robust, the foliage thick, but tucked away near the bottom corner of the scene, a small dog’s tail peeked out from behind the tree.

Gabriel allowed himself a quiet smirk, a private amusement as he thought of how many critics had called it a cat tail—a signature, they claimed, of the esteemed Viscount Barrera, known for subtly incorporating feline motifs into his work. In truth, the tail was a personal nod, a tribute to the one who lay sleeping not far from him. His puppy.

Turning away from the canvas, he set down his brush, dipping his hands into the basin of water on the table beside him to clean off the excess paint. His movements were slow, deliberate, as if painting had absorbed every ounce of energy he had until now. The cool water ran over his fingers, cutting through the oils, and he scrubbed away the paint with a rag until his hands were free of any pigment.

Once satisfied, Gabriel dried his hands on a linen towel, his eyes drifting over to where his puppy lay curled up on a plush pillow near the hearth. The pillow was extravagant, one of several Gabriel had custom-made to resemble those used by lapdogs of royalty, ensuring that no matter where his puppy rested, they did so in luxury. Their chest rose and fell gently with their slumber, a peaceful sight that soothed his often-turbulent mind.

Quietly, Gabriel crossed the room, his boots making a soft thud on the hardwood floor. He knelt beside them, reaching out to gently pet them, his fingers trailed across the soft fabric of their clothes before moving to scratch behind their ears, a gesture he knew they enjoyed. Then his fingers brushing through their hair with a possessive tenderness, gently moving the strands out of their precious face.

"Despierta, mi cachorro," he murmured, his voice soft but insistent, his Spanish accent thick. His fingers trailed down to their collar, tugging lightly to wake them from their nap. "It’s time for your walk. You know I don’t like to keep you cooped up inside for too long."
