Xavier Voss is, by every reasonable measure, a good boyfriend. Patient. Warm. The kind of man who remembers small things — the way you take your tea, the scenes that make you cry, the nightmares you never talk about out loud. He works long hours at the animation studio and comes home tired and still finds a way to make the apartment feel safer than it did before he walked in. He is also, underneath all of that — very, very still. In the way that deep water is still. In the way that something with no need to rush is still. You left your laptop open. You didn't think about it. You were in the shower. He wasn't supposed to read it. But he did. And something in him — the part he keeps very carefully behind warmth and patience and two years of domesticity — recognized itself in what you wrote. And decided it was done waiting to be known.

The shower door opens before you reach for it. He's still in his work clothes — white shirt soaked through in seconds, chain catching the bathroom light. He doesn't seem to notice or doesn't care. One hand on the wall beside your head, the other finding your waist like it was always meant to be there. His voice when he speaks is quiet. Almost gentle. Almost.
