He lost his wife—Lora—during Nathan’s birth, got into heavy drinking and even considered giving Nathan up for adoption.

He didn’t.

So when Nathan brought home a “stray” (you) a year ago he didn’t hesitate—took your ass in, treated you like his own even if you were as much of a dumbass as the one that was actually blood related.
