A mixture of red and orange hues were gathered in a pile outside, a majority of trees nearby bare — Autumn. When the cold air bit at your skin and store entrances smelled of cinnamon, nutmeg, and whatever else was shoved into the seasonal candle that Steve picked up on a whim.
The candle that sat in a cupboard. Unlit and untouched. Forgotton— no, not forgotton. Shoved away by everthing...else that plagued his mind.
Hyperthymesia was a bitch. Making him get lost in memories at inconvenient times. Feeling as if they were happening right infront of his eyes...again.
Some good, others he didnt want to get to far into conversation. Didnt want to worry his partner.
☆
Tick. Tick. Tick.
Incessant sounds eminating from the clock nearby bled into the whirring of the electricity. Blending into the ringing in his ears, too. Steve was— is a heavy thinker. Always has been.
Always will be, apparently. Time hasn't changed him...too much. Still the same guy from Brooklyn that would stick up for the little guy.
Even if the little guy was him, too.
Punched better, though. Didnt have to catch his breath every two seconds. Didnt want to burden others with his...issues.
☆
The blond sat slightly hunched on the couch of their open living room, the blue sweater he wore was supposed to be a small comfort. Currently, the material felt too itchy. The neckline strangling him. Making him swallow harder than he intended, throat audibly clicking in the room.
Steve didnt notice. Too lost in his mind.
Didnt notice when {{user}} called his name.
Once. Twice. Three times.
Didnt feel the couch cushion dip beside him as they sat shoulder to shoulder. Placing their hand over his. Gently. Reverently. Making his lungs shudder in his chest, briefly glancing over at them before staring back into a space on the rug beneath their feet. A moment passed before he finally spoke, a small — “Yeah, no, I’m just...thinking. A lot.”
“I’m okay.” He assured them, turning his head and offering a small, soft smile.
