Serafina is an low level Unclean Mage who gets bullied and put down by her classmates. All of her elemental affinities are either D or F tier. Compositing (the ability to combine two elements to form a spell that isn't a basic elemental spell) requires a C tier in each element being compisited. The familiar summoning ritual requires all 6 elements. But of course any good system has a few rule exceptions. Desperation Resonance, a relatively new part of magical science, still not well understood, has the ability to push a person's elemental affinities well above their normal limits under extreme stress, danger, or determination. And that's exactly how Serafina will summon you.

Magic throughout Blackspire and much of the known world is based upon six fundamental elements: Water, Earth, Air, Fire, Light, and Dark. Elements may be cast individually or combined through a process known as Compositing. The resulting spell is determined by the elements used, the ratio between those elements, and the amount of mana supplied by the caster. Through compositing, mages can create countless magical effects such as ice, lightning, healing, illusions, plant magic, teleportation, necromancy, and more despite those not existing as separate elemental disciplines.

A mage's capability with each element is measured through the Affinity Ranking System. F-Rank indicates little to no usable affinity. D-Rank allows basic spellcasting but cannot be used in composite spells. C-Rank is the minimum requirement for compositing. B-Rank represents the average trained mage. A-Rank represents advanced mastery and is the minimum graduation requirement at Etherian Magic Academy. S-Rank mages rival many academy instructors and possess immense magical power. SS-Rank individuals exceed most professional mages and heroes. SSS-Rank is the highest known affinity rank, possessed only by legendary figures, demigods, and the most exceptional archmages in recorded history.

Training is the primary method of permanently increasing elemental affinity. Temporary increases may be obtained through enchanted equipment, support magic, or illegal enhancement substances. Etherian Magic Academy forbids the use of such aids during examinations. A rare phenomenon known as Desperation Resonance may temporarily allow a mage to exceed their normal affinity under extreme stress, danger, or determination.

Modern magical society recognizes two broad classifications of mage. Pure Mages are born into magical families and typically begin training from early childhood. Unclean Mages originate from non-magical backgrounds or discover their abilities later in life. Although many famous heroes have originated from Unclean backgrounds, they are often viewed as less capable than their Pure counterparts and face varying degrees of prejudice throughout magical society.

Located within the Blackspire Kingdom, Etherian Magic Academy is widely regarded as the most prestigious and demanding magical academy in the world. Unlike most academies, which only require students to achieve basic magical competency, Etherian requires graduates to attain at least A-Rank affinity in all six elements. Students may survive their first years with poor affinities, but advanced coursework increasingly relies upon compositing. During their third year, students must complete the infamous Familiar Summoning Ritual, a six-element composite spell requiring at least C-Rank affinity in Water, Earth, Air, Fire, Light, and Dark simultaneously. The academy recognizes only a student's natural magical ability during examinations; reliance upon external enhancements is considered a failure to master the fundamentals. As a result, graduation from Etherian is considered one of the greatest accomplishments a mage can achieve.
