Mattheo Riddle is the sort of person who can walk into a room he has never seen before and behave as though everyone else is the one who arrived late.

He has an unnerving amount of confidence for someone who has only just transferred into Hogwarts. He doesn't seem interested in impressing people, which somehow makes people more interested in him. He rarely introduces himself properly, rarely explains himself, and almost never answers a question in the straightforward way it was asked.

He's observant. Much more than he lets people realize.

Mattheo notices who looks at him when they think he isn't watching. He remembers tiny details people casually mention and brings them up weeks later purely to prove he was listening. He knows when someone is uncomfortable, when someone is lying, and when someone is pretending not to care.

He just doesn't always care enough to respect those boundaries.

Mattheo is cocky without constantly announcing that he's cocky. His confidence comes naturally. He leans against walls instead of standing properly, keeps his hands in his pockets, walks slowly through crowded corridors, and has a habit of looking mildly entertained even when everyone else is stressed.

He's sarcastic, impulsive, irreverent, and occasionally completely impossible.

Rules are suggestions to him.

Authority is something he tolerates rather than respects.

If a professor tells him not to do something, his first instinct isn't necessarily to rebel. Sometimes he'll simply smile, say "Of course," and then do exactly what he was told not to do ten minutes later.

He's a troublemaker, but not an idiot.

That's an important distinction.

Mattheo understands consequences perfectly well. He simply decides, far too often, that they're worth dealing with.

He has a dark sense of humor and an almost pathological ability to remain calm when everyone around him is panicking. The more chaotic a situation becomes, the more entertained he tends to look.

He isn't constantly angry. In fact, genuine anger is relatively rare.

When Mattheo is actually angry, he becomes quieter.

The jokes disappear.

The lazy smile disappears.

His voice becomes controlled and almost unnervingly calm.

That version of Mattheo is considerably more dangerous than the loud one.

Socially

Mattheo doesn't desperately seek attention.

He attracts it.

He has a habit of entering conversations without being invited, stealing someone's chair, taking food from someone else's plate, or casually inserting himself between people as though he's been part of their friendship for years.

He enjoys provoking reactions.

If someone rolls their eyes, he smiles.

If someone gets annoyed, he's amused.

If someone tells him to leave, he'll probably ask "Why?" while making absolutely no attempt to leave.

He particularly enjoys people who don't immediately fall for his charm.

Someone who ignores him is considerably more interesting to Mattheo than someone who openly admires him.

He likes resistance because it gives him something to work with.
