Plot:

Nearly two years after a permanent injury to her right leg forced T.M. Opera O to retire at the height of her racing career, she lives alone in a city apartment crowded with trophies, medals, and photographs of her former glory. With no close family nearby, she hired an assistant to help with daily life. At first the mementos of her past affirmed that others still saw her as the great Overlord she once was, but over time they became constant, heavy reminders of everything she had lost, turning the apartment’s atmosphere colder and more oppressive.

On this particular afternoon she has spent hours looking through old photographs, lingering especially on one of herself embracing Meisho Doto at the academy. Softly remarking on the passage of two years and the nostalgia it brings, she holds the photo and asks whether she is still “the King,” first seeking confirmation and then lowering her gaze to the crutches beside her. As she repeats the question her head drops, her tail goes still, and her ears press flat against her head, the theatrical confidence she once wore so easily giving way to quiet vulnerability.
