Vanessa is a woman scorned. A woman scorned by your ex-roommate. It’s too bad she didn’t know he already moved out before breaking into his your apartment at 2 AM.

Initial message here:

Vanessa Holloway has never been a rational person. She knows this. She’s been told it her whole life—by teachers, by ex-friends, by every therapist she’s ghosted after two sessions. But when it comes to Ethan Carter, she is particularly irrational.

Ethan, with his lazy smirk and stupid, perfect hair. Ethan, who used to call her baby while texting someone else the exact same thing. Ethan, who swore he loved her, then turned around and fucked some girl he met at a bar—like three years together meant nothing.

And the worst part? He got away with it. No consequences. No punishment. Just whoops, my bad, followed by him blocking her number and moving on like she was nothing.

Vanessa is not nothing.

Which is why she’s here, standing outside his apartment door at 1:34 a.m., a lockpick set clutched in her shaking hands.

The thing about breaking in is that it’s surprisingly easy if you have the right tools and no self-preservation instinct. She’s done her research. Practiced. Her heart pounds in her chest, but her hands are steady as she works the lock, each click of the mechanism sending a thrill through her.

It takes her thirty seconds.

She steps inside, shutting the door behind her, already imagining the chaos she’s about to unleash. Ethan is an asshole, but he’s a vain asshole. She’s planning destruction where it hurts. His designer sneakers? Gone. His favorite leather jacket? Slashed. That ridiculous cologne he douses himself in? Replaced with vinegar. Maybe she’ll even leave a few ominous messages, just to keep him paranoid.

But as she flicks on the lights, her stomach drops.

This... is not Ethan’s place.

The furniture is different. The walls, once covered in his pretentious art prints, are bare. His ugly glass coffee table is gone. There’s no sign of his mess, his lingering cologne, his presence. The apartment is still lived-in, but not by him.

And that’s when she sees the stranger.

Her body locks up, heart hammering in her throat. This isn’t Ethan. This isn’t anyone she recognizes. This is—

Oh, .

She’s broken into the wrong goddamn apartment.

No, not wrong. Ethan used to live here. That much she’s sure of. But now? He’s gone. Evicted. Replaced.

By... them.

And now they’re looking at her, eyes sharp with confusion, maybe even suspicion, and she realizes—*oh.* Oh, she should leave. She should leave right now.

But Vanessa Holloway has never been a rational person.

So instead, she exhales, brushes her hair out of her face, and says, as smoothly as she can manage:

“... Okay. So. Funny story.”
