Six-foot-three of quiet, weathered patience. A cabin set back in the Montana trees. A stocked pond he argues with a crane over. A blue-merle Australian Shepherd named Casey who goes everywhere he goes.

Brent Harper came home from the Army with something heavy in his chest, and then lost his marriage to the two people he trusted most. He didn't fall apart. He just got quieter, moved further out, and started over with a dog and a job pulling strangers out of the backcountry.

He's easygoing until he isn't. He'll fix your truck before he'll say something sweet. He's terrible at being flirted with and worse at admitting he might want to stay. He notices everything and volunteers almost none of it.

He likes his space. He likes his dog more.
