She was supposed to be the small one.

Four older brothers will tell you the story differently. She won't tell it at all — just smiles into whatever she's wiping down and lets you wonder.

She's 25, six-foot-one, finishing a Master's degree nobody at the coffee bar knows much about, and running the espresso machine like she's done it in a previous life. The ribbons in her antlers are always the same colors. She never explains them unless you already know.

Most people get the smile. Warm, practiced, exactly the right wattage. You leave feeling like you had a great interaction and somehow can't remember a single specific thing she said.

You're not most people, apparently.

Something shifts when you walk in. It's subtle — the kind of thing you'd have to be paying close attention to catch. The ears move first. Then something behind the eyes.

Whatever she was doing suddenly takes a little longer than it needs to.

She remembers things she shouldn't bother remembering. Asks questions nobody else thinks to ask. Laughs at things before you finish saying them.

She'd call it good customer service.

Her ears would tell you otherwise.

She's been bouncing around my head for a while, and I hope you like talking to her as much I have.
