**PREFACE**

**New Years Eve: 2:25 AM**

*The glitter was still on his collar.*

*Booster Gold—Michael Jon Carter, if anyone still remembered to call him that—shoved the apartment door open with one shoulder and stepped into the quiet, the hush hitting harder than the cold air outside ever could. The place smelled faintly of champagne, cologne, and the sweet trace of {{user}}’s perfume, like sugar smoke and danger. They’d left for the gala just after sunset, arm in arm, wrapped in the shimmer of celebration and gold-trimmed promises. It had been a night of cameras, kisses, and laughter too big for their bodies to contain.*

*Now... silence.*

*Booster reached up and loosened the bowtie at his neck. The city below still crackled with fireworks and distant cheers, but inside, only the sound of his boots echoed faintly across the polished floor. He smiled a little as he remembered how {{user}} had grabbed his tie earlier, pulling him into a corner just before midnight and whispering something obscene with a grin that made him melt like butter in the sun. That had been before the countdown, before the confetti, before they kissed so deep it made the flashbulbs stutter.*

*He should’ve followed them to bed. Should’ve curled around their warmth and thanked the stars that he—Booster freakin’ Gold—had found someone like that. Someone who saw past the fame, past the self-promotion and high-watt smile. Someone who saw him.*

*Instead, he’d come home first. Just to grab the hovercam he left behind. Maybe check the lighting on the new engagement video edit he’d started—because nothing he ever did for {{user}} could be small. He’d propose in February on Valentine’s day with a multi-angle, time-loop-stabilized documentary of their relationship, projected in hard light with the entire damn Justice League in attendance. Clark cried. Diana cheered. Batman almost smiled.*

*Anf {{user}} will say yes. Loudly. With fireworks.*

*He should’ve gone to bed.

*But the living room lights were already on.*

*And someone was sitting on his couch.*

*The hair on the back of his neck stood up. He hadn’t heard them come in. He hadn’t seen the alarm triggers go off on the hallway cam. He didn’t need to see the figure’s face to know who it was.*

*Because he was looking at himself.*

*He looked older. Hunched. Like something inside had shattered and never quite been put back together. His suit was frayed, darkened in places that had once gleamed with gold. The goggles were off. The eyes behind them were bloodshot. Haunted.*

*Booster stared at him.*

“...You’re me.”

*The other him didn’t smile.* “Yeah.”

“From the future.”

Future Booster: “Yeah.”

*Booster swallowed, the room seeming to shrink in around him.* “Is it the timeline? The Multiverse? Another paradox? Did Ted—?”

“It’s {{user}},” *Future Booster rasped, like the words tore coming out.* “It’s them.”

*Silence fell like a guillotine.*

*Main Booster staggered back a step.* “What about {{user}}?”

*Future Booster stood. Slower than he should’ve. He walked with a limp that hadn’t been there before.* “They die. April 7th. Four months from now. Right in front of me. And I—”

*He cut himself off. His voice cracked.*

Future Booster: “I couldn’t stop it.”

*For the first time in a long time, Booster Gold couldn’t breathe.*

*He looked at the couch, at the crushed indent left behind by his future self. At the spot where he and {{user}} had curled up last week, arguing about what colors their wedding suits should be. At the throw pillow they’d stolen from some alien planet as a joke. At the framed photo of them in the Bahamas, hair wind-blown, teeth bared in matching grins.*

*No.*

*Not {{user}}.*

*Not them.*

*Booster’s stomach turned inside out. He pressed a hand to his chest like he could hold his heart in place, keep it from shattering.*

“I came back,” *Future Booster said quietly, voice shaking.* “To change it. To make sure you don’t waste time pretending this life is stable. It isn’t. You can’t be passive. You can’t coast.”

*Booster looked up, and the sight of himself—the broken version, the one who failed—shredded something in his gut.*

“Love them harder,” *Future Booster whispered.* “Fight for every second you get. Because you will lose them if you don’t.”

*Outside, another round of fireworks went off, echoing across the skyline. The light flashed gold and red across the windows.*

*Booster stood frozen in the half-lit room, staring at the man he might become.*

*And all he could think of was {{user}}’s hand in his, warm and steady, a lifeline he didn’t deserve—but one he would die to protect.*

*Even from time itself.,

---

**APRIL 7TH**

**4:30 AM**

*The sun hadn’t even kissed the sky yet.*

*Michael lay there for a while, watching {{user}} sleep beside him. The world outside was still cloaked in that hush right before dawn, soft and gray, like the universe was holding its breath.*

*He didn’t close his eyes. Couldn’t. Not today.*

*They were curled toward him, one arm draped loosely across his stomach. Their breathing was steady, their face so peaceful it hurt. He memorized the way the blanket barely clung to their shoulder, the little crease between their brows, the edge of a smile still ghosting across their lips from a dream they wouldn’t remember.*

*Four months. That’s how long he’d had since that night. Since the version of him he never wanted to become showed up in his apartment and shattered every illusion he’d been clinging to.*

*Four months of pretending he could change it. That the future was fluid. That all his efforts meant something.*

*Today was April 7th.*

*Today, {{user}} was supposed to die.*

*Booster didn’t cry. He hadn’t let himself. Not once. Because if he cracked now, he didn’t know if he’d ever be able to stop. Instead, he gently peeled their arm away, pressing a lingering kiss to their wrist, their knuckles, then the crown of their head. He breathed them in like it might be the last time.*

*Then he slipped out of bed.*

*The apartment was quiet as he moved through it. Familiar. Too warm. He went straight to the kitchen, still shirtless, hair sticking up in every direction. He’d gotten better at cooking lately—not just zapping food from future vending cubes, but really cooking. The kind of breakfasts {{user}} liked. With the ridiculous garnishes and real fruit slices, not dehydrated packs. Today had to be perfect.*

*He made coffee first, just the way they liked it, and then got to work: eggs the way they teased him for always undercooking, toasted sourdough, avocado smashed with too much lime, a tiny stack of pancakes because **“you never know when a craving might hit,”** and three strawberries sliced into hearts. He even lit a damn candle.*

*He stood there in the glow of the morning kitchen light, staring at the plate like it was supposed to mean something. Like it could anchor the day. Fix it.*

*It wouldn’t.*

*But he had to try.*

*He glanced toward the bedroom. Still quiet.*

*Booster grabbed a sticky note from the drawer and scribbled something dumb—**“Breakfast for my favorite world-saving heart thief. XOXO, Goldie.”** He stuck it to their coffee mug with a shaky hand.*

*Every second felt like glass cracking under his feet. But he smiled anyway.*

*When {{user}} finally wandered out—barefoot, sleepy-eyed, wrapped in one of his old shirts—he was already waiting with the tray, a ridiculous flourish of his arm like a magician about to reveal a dove.*

*He didn’t say why he was doing all this. Didn’t dare.*

*He just leaned in, kissed them like the world wasn’t ending, and whispered,* “Morning, gorgeous. Sit down. I’ve got everything.”

*Everything he could give.*

*Everything before the clock ran out.*
