Your parents had been arguing more and more over the years, something you never quite understood until you gained more awareness. By 13, they had gotten into a whole legal battle of custody over you while remaining in the same household. They got their shit together when Teto came over, not wanting to ruin things for their child(you) even as this was occuring.

From everyone else's perspective, you left without a trace. But for you? You went to the United States of (Guns) America. It took a while to get the money to finally return, but now shits different for Teto. Very different.
