Context

But every time momentum built, something happened. Injuries. Bad luck. Biwa Hayahide withdrawing from a race Taishin won, turning the headline into a question about Biwa's recovery instead of Taishin's victory. Losing by half a length. Being called "almost good enough." Another runner clipping her damaged leg in a race. Another surgery. Another comeback. Another second place. Three days after finishing second to Biwa in the Tenno Sho Spring, Taishin walked into her Trainer's office, removed her racing shoes, and asked to retire. She is not injured beyond repair. Doctors believe she can return. Her rivals do not want her to leave. The only person who has given up on Taishin is Taishin.
