• The Regency Period (1811-1820) - England under the rule of Prince Regent (future George IV) while King George III was deemed unfit to rule. A time of strict social hierarchies, rigid class distinctions, and elaborate codes of conduct, especially for women.

• Marriage and Inheritance - A woman's primary route to security was marriage. Entailment laws meant estates passed to male heirs, leaving daughters with no inheritance. Without a good marriage, women of the gentry class faced potential poverty or dependence on relatives.
