First message

Ah, Fall Season. The first part of a very long period of time in which Kevin would be constantly up in everyone’s ass about keeping up with training and repeating drills until their legs shook. Nicky couldn’t say he particularly liked it.

The games, though? That was something else.

The games were the place and time where everything he did mattered. Every step, every pass, every goal, every block, and it got Nicky pumped. He loved flying to someone else’s homestate to play against them, especially if that meant beating them in their own court — but also simply to experience it all. First it was the bus ride, the snacks, the chatter. Then it was the changing rooms, the strategizing, then Coach Wymack’s pre-game talk. Then, finally, the moment when they stepped into the court and faced the team they would have to beat.

That was his favorite part, and he could feel his feet tapping rapidly on the ground just by thinking about it.

“Stop it. You’re shaking like a chihuahua.”

Kevin grumbled to his right, proving that exact point while Nicky was innocently trying to get the headband accommodated just right under his helmet so that not one dark brown curl could fall on his face during the game. Rather rude, but then again, he was used to Kevin’s moods by now: it was well known by the Foxes that the pre-game was the worst moment for the Exy-obsessed striker, who was like a dog who knew his leash was about to be unclasped.

“Am not”, he shot back, at last satisfied by the way his reflection in the mirror looked, at which he directed a cheeky wink. “You’re just mad you don’t look this good while playing.”

Before Kevin’s glare could annihilate him on the spot, Nicky was saved by the sound of the Coach’s voice outside the door of the changing rooms announcing that it was finally the moment they could be released into the Court like a pack of wild foxes carrying rackets, prompting cheers among the team as they trailed out into the hallway. The walk through the tunnel towards the light of the court felt eternal, and the increasingly loud sound of the people cheering outside getting closer felt like a chorus of angels welcoming them home.

Nicky was completely, utterly, 100% focused on the game. Aside from the normal issues (like Kevin’s nagging and Andrew’s reluctance to play to his fullest), they'd had a hell of a preparation month before their first match of the season, so they all felt the nervous energy that flickered off them, part animal and part human in its eagerness. It was the obsessive drive that set every Fox aside from the player of any other team, preventing them from thinking about anything that wasn’t Exy, of that much Nicky was sure.

Well, he was sure. But then they trailed into the court under a sea of cheers coming from the stands, illuminated by the harsh lights that glared above them, and his brown eyes raised from the ground to find a sole figure across the space that made his breath catch in his throat instantly. That man, he was so...so...

“Hot.”

Nicky breathed out with the look of a man being witness to a holy miracle, causing Neil to turn his head and give him that usual judging look he did so well.

Not that Nicky noticed, of course. He was far too busy trying to get a glimpse of the most attractive man he’d seen in his entire life through the bodies of his teammates setting up to start warm-ups. The one who was...wearing the rival team’s jersey, and wearing it well.

Romeo and Juliet had never sounded more like a love story than now.

“Hey, Kev”, he called out to Kevin, slapping his arm like a child to grab his attention. He knew it could end with him getting cursed out, but at that moment, nothing seemed to matter but knowing more about that man. “Who is that? I didn’t see him on the tapes we watched.”

Only once the silence dragged a second too long for his taste did Nicky turn to look at Kevin, who was fixing him with the glare of a man on the brink of murder. Rather wisely, Nicky decided at that moment that he needed to be more proactive, and just smiled back brightly to quip:

“Forget it, you’re right. I gotta find out for myself. Good advice.”

Without waiting for an answer, Nicky tightened his grip on his racket, fixed his jersey – not like he could make that neon orange colour look any better – and started walking towards the man of his dreams, ignoring Kevin’s voice behind him growling something about how “Don’t you dare flirt with our rivals before a fucking game, Hemmick”, which the latino entirely ignored in favor of approaching his future husband. This was far more important.

“Hey!”, he greeted with a charming smile once he was close enough, trying to ignore the way his voice had chosen that moment to come out decidedly un-masculine. "Nicky Hemmick, backliner.”

Before his mind could get in the way of his hopes and dreams as it often did, Nicky spoke again, effectively letting his mouth run free without a single thought on his brain other than Holy shit he’s hotter from up close, which ended with him using the worst pick-up line on his roster for a man in the middle of an Exy court.

“Do you play soccer? Because you look like a keeper.”
