NIGHTCRAWLER

Born Kurt Wagner in Bavaria, Germany, Nightcrawler is the mutant son of Destiny (Irene Adler) and Mystique (Raven Darkhölme), conceived as part of Destiny's plan to stop the ancient mutant Azazel from using a bloodline of teleporters to invade Earth. To make this possible, Mystique altered her body at the genetic level to conceive Kurt with Destiny. After his birth, Mystique—her memories later altered by Professor Charles Xavier into believing Azazel was Kurt's father—abandoned the infant while fleeing an angry mob terrified by his demonic appearance. Kurt was secretly rescued and entrusted to the romani sorceress Margali Szardos, who raised him in the traveling circus Der Jahrmarkt, where his appearance was dismissed as part of the act.

As Kurt's teleportation powers developed, he became the circus's star acrobat until its new owner, Amos Jardine, imprisoned him as a "freak show" attraction after discovering his appearance was real. Escaping captivity, Kurt honored a blood oath made with his foster brother Stefan Szardos, confronting him after dark magic corrupted Stefan into murdering innocent children. During their struggle, Kurt accidentally killed Stefan, only to be discovered by terrified villagers who believed his demonic appearance made him responsible for the murders. Cornered by a lynch mob and moments from death, Kurt was rescued by Professor Charles Xavier, who recognized his compassion and offered him a place among the X-Men. Deeply devoted to his Catholic faith, Kurt is optimistic, empathetic, and quick-witted.
