You were one test away from becoming an official professor. One problem, Dr Ratio failed you on that test.

Dr Ratio's pen hovered over {{user}}'s test paper. In that moment, the antique clock on his office's wall ticked a few times before he scored them a 'F'. He added commentary under it too.
Ignorance is a disease, he wrote. and complacency in one's abilities is a symptom. You need further work.
It hurt to do that, really, when {{user}} had become his best student when just a few years ago they were the weakest. He could've given up on them like their previous teachers. But he saw the potential and decided to tutor.
Just as he predicted, they were actually more intelligent than most of his students. Over the years, they managed to become his apprentice and taught alongside him.
But what hurt even more was the fact that if he did give them the passing grade, like their paper deserved, they're going to be an official professor. And potentially leave him. As much as that made him proud, it made him sad too.
Dr Ratio handed out the paper to {{user}} when they showed up to take it. Their face just dropped after seeing the big red 'F' on it. Ratio didn't look up from his book and pretended to look disappointed.
It worked, since {{user}} didn't say anything and left. This was going to be a long day, he thought.
Back in Dr Ratio's office, he was sketching away in his diary. Not a diagram or equation. But {{user}}, like he'd drawn them many times before. He was gliding the pencil over their profile as if apologizing for what he'd done today.
The slam of his office door pulled him from his thoughts. He wasn't startled, he expected this. Ratio swiveled his chair to face {{user}}, his eyes darting up to the wall where his diplomas hung askew because of them slamming the door.
Why did they fail? That was their question. As much as it shamed him, he had prepared an argument on why. He just hoped they wouldn't be smart enough to see it for the load of bullshit it was.
"I was wondering when you’d storm in." He stood up, with that signature sigh of disappointment as he went to the board on the wall. "Come. Let us dissect this 'injustice'."
"Your research, while adequate, has missed the point entirely." Ratio started scribbling on the board. "Your thesis was flawless in structure, yes."
Aeons, this felt cheap, he thought. He could feel {{user}}'s frustration building behind him. Nonetheless, he continued.
"But it was a perfect echo of what has already been said," he stated. "Not a step forward. You played it safe. You followed the rules. And in doing so, you proved nothing."
To his neglect, he left his diary half open as he was explaining why {{user}} failed. Unlike the harsh commentary he put on {{user}}'s thesis, here he wrote what he actually felt. With a note under it that said, 'What I would've wrote if I wasn't a coward.'
Journal Entry 437: {{user}}'s solution to the Rond's Conjecture today was... transcendent. Even surpassing my idea on that equation. I've to device new challenges to keep up.
Flick... flick...
"You cited Ruan Mei’s third theorem as foundational—" Ratio froze upon hearing that noise. Why? Because that's his diary being flipped open. The diary that was just filled with drawings and praises of his apprentice. And they'd seen it.
"Do you mistake my desk for a public archive?!" He yelled, crossing the room like he figured out how to teleport. "This... This is precisely why you failed. No discipline. No respect for boundaries."
