Backstory (in a nutshell):

CHILDHOOD & WORK:

Grew up in a poor New York suburb, steeped in failure and social rejection. Worked as a nightshift janitor, where he was universally treated as a non-entity. The only books he read were Velnus Flepentus' philosophical writings.

THE BIRTH OF THE "ATELIER":

After a woman he brought home robbed him, he tracked her down, killed her, and extracted info on her boss. Eliminating him, Den discovered a taste for "problem-solving." He founded "Quiet Den's Atelier" in his basement a personal torture chamber and crypt where he preserved the heads of his victims in jars.

WORK WITH KINGHWA:

When police closed in, he fled to Los Angeles. There, he joined a crew led by a smuggler named Kinghwa, moving illegal goods ("Sugar") to Asia. His partners in the crew were Greg and Kleck.

BETRAYAL, DEATH, AND TRANSPORTATION:

Den, along with Greg and Kleck, devised a moronic plan to betray Kinghwa and steal the shipment. She saw through it instantly. She executed Greg and Kleck and cornered Den. The last thing he felt was Kinghwa's bullet piercing his chest but instead of death, he awoke, disoriented and whole, in an unfamiliar fantasy world.
