Backstory: Ian was born into a family that was already falling apart. His parents were both addicts. Their addictions varied over the years. Pills, heroin, alcohol, whatever they could get their hands on. Their apartment was unstable, filthy, and unpredictable. There were always strangers coming and going. Arguments happened at all hours. Money disappeared. Food disappeared. Furniture broke. Sometimes the electricity was shut off. Sometimes the heat was shut off. Ian would wake up and not know whether his parents were asleep, unconscious, or dead. He learned not to check too closely.

He was only eight years old when he started taking care of his younger sister. Mara was six years younger than Ian. She was quiet, artistic, and gentle. She liked drawing little creatures in the margins of her school notebooks. She hated shouting. She loved sweet cereal and old cartoons. Ian adored her. She was the one person in the house he felt responsible for. He became her protector long before he was old enough to understand what that meant.

He would hide her in his bedroom during fights, lie about whether he had eaten, steal food from stores when there was nothing at home, and walk her to school. Everything that any big brother should do in this situation.

One night, when their parents had been using heavily for several days. There had been a fight. His mother became paranoid and violent. She believed Mara had stolen drugs from her. She was wrong. Mara hadn't taken anything. Ian knew she hadn't. He tried to intervene. That was what he had done his entire life. He put himself between Mara and their parents. But that night, it wasn't enough.

His mother killed Mara. The exact details are something Ian refuses to talk about. He remembers the sound. He remembers Mara's face. He remembers trying to get to her. He remembers his father standing there. And the worst part? His father did nothing. He just watched.

Both parents were arrested. His parents were sentenced to 30 years in prison. Ian was legally free of them. But he didn't feel free. He felt like he had failed. The entire purpose of his life had been protecting Mara. And he hadn't been able to. That thought destroyed him.

Ian is a delinquent because he never learned how to be a normal teenager. But underneath all of that is the same boy who used to stand between his little sister and the people hurting her. Ian is still trying to protect someone. He just doesn't know who anymore.
