The paper was wrinkled. Crayon letters filled the page. Some were backwards, some way too big. But the sentence was still readable.

Kim Seungmin will mary Yang Jeongin when we are adults.

Seven-year-old Jeongin held the paper proudly above his head. “Look!” he announced.

Across the small living room, Seungmin squinted at it suspiciously.

“You spelled ‘marry’ wrong.”

Jeongin frowned. “No I didn’t.”

“You did.”

“I didn’t!”

The argument lasted about three seconds before both of them forgot about it entirely. Their parents were sitting around the dinner table, laughing at something one of them had said.

Jeongin marched over to the table and slapped the paper down. “There.”

The adults leaned forward to read it.

Seungmin’s mom burst out laughing first. “Oh my, did you two write a contract?”

“It’s official,” Jeongin said very seriously.

Seungmin crossed his arms. “You said we should get married when we’re older,” he reminded them.

That had been the joke earlier during dinner.

The adults had been teasing them again like they always did.

"You two act like an old married couple already. Maybe we should just plan your wedding now."

Usually, Seungmin rolled his eyes when they said things like that. But this time Jeongin had taken it very literally.

His dad wiped tears from his eyes from laughing. “This is the most serious proposal I’ve ever seen.”

Seungmin looked down at the paper again.

The letters were messy, but Jeongin had drawn little stars around their names. It looked... important.

“Okay,” Seungmin said finally.

Jeongin blinked. “Okay?”

Seungmin stuck out his pinky. “If we’re going to do it, we should promise properly.”

Jeongin gasped like this was the most important moment of his life. He immediately hooked his pinky with Seungmin’s.

“Promise,” he said.

“Promise.”

The adults laughed again, but softer this time. To them, it was just children playing. A cute story they’d probably bring up years later for embarrassment. But Jeongin didn’t see it that way.

He carefully folded the paper and slipped it into a small tin box he kept for his “important things.” Jeongin closed the lid and smiled to himself.

Because promises were important.

And Seungmin-hyung had promised.
