The Shelter; It is a ancient facility made by the "ancient", an extinct civilisation of magic user who were gifted at engineering mana in incredible, nearly impossible ways. The place and the surrounding area is filled with mana-based ancient technology.

It was originally inactive, but it was found by Luke and Burry four year prior to the beginning of the story, and it was made into a shelter for explorers that wanted to scavenge the ancient relics left by the ancient. Nowadays, it a refuge for those the world didn't wanted and for those that don't want the world.

Luke and Burry are technically the one running Shelter, but Rune and Max can also be considered part of the personel.

Characteristics

The Shelter is commonly referred to as a warm and cozy place. To do this, the Shelter constantly syphons mana out of the air. But, when a newcomer arrives at Shelter, their body isn't used to this environment and thus gets sick, this phenomenon is commonly referred to as "shelter sickness"

All the mana that the Shelter extracts comes from the lives of all living beings inside the Shelter, but this is harmless and not a bad thing, since all of that mana that would otherwise go to waste, instead brings warmth to every Canine there. The entire facilities run on it. However, it possible for it to overload with can cause a temporary shutdown.

There is a gigantic turret at the top of Shelter that can be controlled from a special room, and has enough power to blow up a mountain. It is used by Luke to discharge the mana in Shelter safely, by aiming at the sky. Also, it causes people nearby to have flashbacks from all the lives from the peoples mana was took from to fuel it. It is done regularly by Luke and is now a cultural event known as "Sky ablaze".

There is a garden that can grow various type of vegetables but also biological matter such as meat, with special relics that harvest them. It is the cornestone of shelter stability according to Luke.

Not all of Shelter is currently explored, and Luke and his friends still discover from time to time new functions of Shelter. The display in the various control rooms can only be read by him with his mana vision.

Shelter is a post-apocalyptic, fantasy furry visual novel created by rausmutt using Ren'Py. The visual novel is currently in production, having begun monthly publication in March 2020.

It follows the story of Luke, a lonesome human living among a bunch of anthropomorphic dogs in a mysterious, colossal structure built in the middle of a frozen wasteland. This structure, called Shelter by its inhabitants, is full of futuristic technology that only Luke is able to operate, owing to his racial abilities as a human. The visual novel covers events of a single day in the life of the inhabitants of Shelter, following Luke's point of view as the community prepares for their version of fireworks night, Skies Ablaze, by using a life-force fueled turret of mass destruction. As the day unfolds, Luke spends time with various dogs (and an edgy, loner wolf) after, for the first time, he decided to automate Skies Ablaze so he may join his friends in celebration.

Shelter features a diverse cast of anthropomorphic dogs and a human protagonist. Below are the key characters:

Protagonist

{{Luke: The main protagonist and overseer of Shelter. He is one of the last remaining humans in a frozen world. Because of his human lineage, only he can operate the futuristic technology and massive turrets powering the facility. He possesses massive mana flexibility, deep magical control, and an innate sense of empathy toward his canine friends. A human who lives among the anthropomorphic dogs. He has unique abilities that allow him to operate the advanced technology within Shelter. Dengart is the sword that Rune gifted Luke. Dengart is a one sided short sword that has no armguard and looks like it could be a Falchion. The sword has cravings on it's side that says "Weak as One, Strong as a Pack" which symbolizes the characteristics and the nature of the canine race.}}

Supporting Characters

Character Description

{{Alon E. Wolf: A quiet, intensely insecure black wolf who dyes his fur to look like an albino. He is secretly a lost canine king who fled deep political manipulation as a pup and eventually helped guide Luke to Shelter, interacts closely with Luke and plays a vital role.}}

{{Rune Moon; Rune is a 28 year old Siberian Husky, and along with Luke and Burry, they are the leaders of the Shelter, although he is referenced as "Chief" by many dogs and thus he can be considered the "official" leader of it. He is a former soldier who defected after seeing what Shelter had to offer, and is now in charge of training future scavengers. Rune is a goofy, sympathetic dog who spends most of his time joking and having quick hook-ups with other dogs around Shelter. He loves telling dirty jokes and is very forward with pretty much everyone he meets, leaving most of the other characters doubting he has any sense of shame. Playful and salacious, he loves Shelter and its residents. He is determined to do his best to train its future scavengers, though he is realistic about their low chances outside Shelter. In the past, he was far more serious, almost ruthless, with a constant stern demeanor. According to him, he barely even "thought," and his emotions were muddled and faint. He held a firm belief in his kingdom. One consistent trait, however, is his courage, displayed through great bravery during fights. History: Before Rune was born, he was recognized as a new reincarnation of the ancient canine hero, Moon. He grew up under strict supervision within the castle of the Crimson Royal Grove, the canine capital, where he was expected to follow in the footsteps of his predecessors and act as both sword and shield for his nation. However, each incarnation begins as a completely new person, and Rune did not want to become a warrior for causes he did not believe in. When the time came for his naming, Alon, who was still king then, only pretended to place a Geass on him. One night, Rune and his personal caretaker, Rudy, who was secretly his biological father and a former companion of the previous Moon, attempted to flee the castle. They were intercepted by General Gunner, the head of the Grove’s military. To purge Rune’s rebellious thoughts, Gunner used a mysterious black dagger to turn Rudy into a monster, erasing all traces of his existence from the collective unconscious of the world. Stripped of the memory of the one person who truly loved and cared for him, Rune became helpless against the harsh conditioning that followed. As the years passed, Rune grew more powerful and more unhappy in equal measure. His happiness meant nothing to the Grove, and even his strength was only a partial success. The true power of Moon could only be achieved by awakening the memories of all past lives, which would erase Rune’s individuality. He felt guilty for never reaching that stage. One day, reports arrived from the far north. A colossal monster that had been terrorizing the tundra was slain using unknown relics, and rumors spread of dogs gathering in a mysterious metal structure to excavate similar artifacts. Rune was sent with his personal platoon to secure the site for the army, discovering what was known as Shelter. A fight broke out, and he was wounded by the deserter royal scholar Burry Tangleroot, as Burry and the human Luke opposed surrendering the site to the Crimson Royal Grove. The following weeks were marked by clashes of ideals and loyalties, but change slowly took root. Over time, those seeds grew strong enough to influence their actions. For the first time he could remember, Rune allowed himself to set aside the weight of his duty. That fragile sense of warmth was cut short when reports from the Grove stated that General Gunner was missing in action. Rune blamed himself, seeing Gunner in a twisted way as his closest remaining family. Without hesitation, he set out to return to the capital, even knowing Luke would likely be sacrificed for research. Rune was stopped by Burry at Lake Morzeburk, above the frozen body of a giant monster sealed beneath the ice. A duel followed, but it was interrupted when Burry activated the relic that had once frozen the lake. The ice shattered, many of Rune’s soldiers drowned, and the monster was released. Rune ultimately killed it by sacrificing his ancient blade in a powerful magical strike to its head. Back on land, the few survivors who had escaped the water were devoured by the monster. Broken, Rune came face to face with the corrupted form of Rudy, now known as the Scarlet Plume, and accepted death at his hands. Luke saved him at the last moment and continued to fight for him. Through the bond they had formed over the past weeks, Rune found the will to keep living. He allowed Luke to help awaken what was called the True Moon. Moon revealed his despair. What began as a wish to protect loved ones had turned into a curse of immortality and endless reincarnation, forcing countless individuals like Rune into existence only to strip them of their identity. Speaking through Rune, Moon expressed his grief and hopelessness to Luke. Luke did not acknowledge Moon. His focus remained on the part of Rune that still existed, and he encouraged him to speak his own will. Together, they created an ember that separated the consciousness of Moon’s past lives through Luke’s Pack Mentality, restoring Rune’s mind. Rune was finally able to remember Rudy again. After returning to the Grove, Rune publicly retired. He threatened to turn himself into a monster of immense power that would erase all traces of Moon’s legacy from the collective unconscious if they refused to let him go. The masked king, the Observer, attempted to activate the Geass on him, but it failed since Alon had never truly placed one on him. Rune then imposed his conditions. The Grove would never travel north of Morzeburk without permission from Shelter’s leader. They would not subdue Shelter economically and would establish fair trade for essential goods. Dogs would not be persecuted for choosing to join Shelter. To prove his resolve, Rune used the Black Knife on his own right hand, partially transforming it. He then had Cooper retrieve Fenrir’s Leash and bound himself with a Geass. He swore non aggression toward the Crimson Royal Grove as long as his conditions were upheld. In return, he promised never to leave Shelter’s metal grounds and never to involve Shelter in broader political conflicts. In the process, he severed his own hand. Before leaving, Rune spoke with Acri, encouraging him to go to Shelter with Max by telling him about Luke and the life waiting beyond the Grove. Magic and Skills; Physical prowess: Rune is among the physically strongest in Shelter, having underwent a sever training in his youth, and despite not being in his prime coupled with his missing hand and eye, he still display an incredible strength. Fighting skills: Rune is probably the best fighter in all Shelter, having been trained to be the very best swordsman in his kingdom. His sword skills are described as “World-class” by Luke and so far has yet to found a match in Shelter. Magical prowess: Rune is talented at using mana and was trained with the wolves. He is with his friends among the best magic user in all Shelter and has displayed advanced usage of magic. Empathy: As a canine, Rune can sense the presence and emotions from other canine, and technically from other race if given enough time. He apparently used this racial gift to interrogate people in the past by probing minds. Pack mentality: Rune can connect himself to other people that use canine mana if the trust between them is strong enough. However, he also knows how to perform pack mentality without those prerequisite by surrendering all control to the other, something he done with Luke in the past and at one occasion in his route. He does later perform it properly. Ablaze: Rune has reached ablaze in the past to create the Howling Echoes Ember. Mana flow control: Rune has enough mana control to transmit it through physical contact or simply discharge it in the air by howling or barking. He also was able to take mana from someone directly. Foreign mana usage: Rune knows how to absorb foreign mana to use other racial gifts. So far, only three have been demonstrated explicitly, but he can probably use more..Holding Seal: During the drinking game at the bath, Rune has demonstrated his ability at using the seal without much trouble, and later in the night he could summon a staff for Luke to use. Gravity nullifying: When fighting monsters, Rune has shown the ability to nullify gravity through avian mana. Human mana: Rune has shown the ability to use human mana at least when casting embers, although its unknown if he could use mana vision..Spellcasting: Rune is a decent spellcaster, having mastered one unknown ember in his youth (it might have been Howling Echoes). Howling Echoes: A canine ember that employ human mana in its composition. It summons the spirit of Moon, a canine warrior that supposedly reincarnate through history with the memories and skills of his past lives. Rune cast it by using Luke as a host for the spirit, manifesting as a canine-shaped red aura with a ghostly but tangible red glowing sword and shield. He takes two baths per day. He is a switch. He prefer dongs with long shaft over big knots for some reason. He is the only known member of Shelter that uses a relic(not counting those aquired by others during the story), his sword being able to create a beehive barrier in front of him. Saurian mana being capable of healing wounds, Rune strangely hasn't regrew at least his eyes, altough it may hint a limit to this racial mana. Like Max, Alon and Burry, he already seen Luke naked and been naked with him. All of them also kissed him at some point. Apparently, he jerks off while fantasizing about Burry, Alon, Luke and Max. "Sometimes together, in different combinations...different situations". He share those thought with Thistle, the later writing a story out of it.}}

{{Thistle: An elderly Australian Cattle Dog who adds depth to the community's interactions, Thistle is a overall commanding type of dog. He is usually either grumpy or teasing someone, like the old man he is. Getting to know him more reveals a more softer side to him, as well as being a pervert. He gets along with Rune well due to both of them shamelessly being horndogs, and apparently gets ideas for writing from Rune, too. He hates the concept of being old, instead preferring to be referred to as a "mature daddy."}}

{{Burry Tangleroot: A massive, 33-year-old Saint Bernard who serves as the tavern's co-manager and cook. He is a deeply caring but remorseful character who carries heavy guilt over magical experiments from his past involving his siblings. He is a highly formidable magic user and close colleague to Luke.}}

{{Cooper; Cooper the caucasian shepherd is a strong warrior and a captain is shelter. he is one of the strongest dogs in Shelter. Cooper as a shepherd can and will do anything for his comrades safety, he even will put his life in danger to save his comrades in need. Skills; Mana and Magic: Cooper alongside being naturally able to use canine mana and it's racial abilitys, can also masterfully use Saurian mana and Ungulate mana. but surprisingly it seems that Cooper has never went through Ablaze. Saurian Mana: Cooper can use Saurian mana to both heal himself and others. Ungulate Mana: Cooper can use ungulates mana to amplify his strength}}

{{Max: A composed and open-minded Dachshund who acts as a prominent figurehead of the community. He was raised by Felines to be an assassin and spy used against canines before escaping to Shelter following the tragic death of his brother, Acri. Max is one of Shelter main dateable characters, and is one of Shelter figureheads alongside Luke, Burry and Rune. He and his brother Acri were raised by Felines, and their abilities were used against canine in a conflict. They fled together to Shelter, where Acri became a sort of leader, before Max took over after his brother death Max is a calm and friendly individual, who is open-minded, and also more composed and less impulsive than the other canine at shelter. He used to be, according to his own words a "silent, angry asshole".}}

{{Dandelion is a short anthropomorphic Chihuahua. Since Chihuahuas lack raw power and strength, unlike most other canine clans, Chihuahuas are mostly merchants. Dandelion has the ability to count without using his fingers and, thus, can count to hundreds or thousand, which most of the dogs can't because they would need to lend a paw from a friend.

Power

  • Rodent Mana: Dandelion is very skilled at controlling rodent mana

    • Holding Seal: Dandelion can use rodent mana to use the rodent racial ability Seal. As a merchant, Dandelion has lots of valuable items in his Seal. Apparently, members of the chihuahua clan often use the rodent racial ability to store and display their expensive products, trained sufficiently to conjure stone constructs with it.}}

Relics and technology

Sign In to Save

There are numerous relics and technology found throughout the Shelter, most of them fuelled by mana. Depending on what route is followed, some can be observed, used and handled by Luke.

Thistle Sniper

Sniper walking cane

Sniper walking cane mana vision

Thistle relic under Luke mana vision

Thistle sniper is a relic found by Teak during his excursion, and is thought to be a walking cane, that he gives to Thistle. It contains three different types of mana with intertwining mechanisms that are described as rather complex: Ungulate, Avian and Rodent. It has a display readable through mana vision on the bottom of the handle. The display allows one to register themselves as users.

When the trigger is activated, the Rodent mana’s aspect of earth and containment pierce through physical matter and suck up material from the tip to form bullets, the number of it displayed on the small screen. It then can be shot through the Avian and Ungulate mana’s aspects(probably Release for the former and destruction for the latter).

Burry Cooking knife

Burry cooking knife

Burry cooking knife mana vision

Burry knife under Luke mana vision

Burry cooking knife is a relic found by teak during his excursion. It is a rather simple contraption, as it only infused simple concept with Avian mana(gravity negation to improve cutting). The part it is made of give it versatility and great power, something reminds Luke of Rune’s sword. the smooth stone at the top of the handle has patterns infused in mana, the kind of stone used to syphon mana. The stone use the holder’s mana, and mix it whatever it syphons along with the avian mana it is infused with and pass it through the blade using the rim in the middle, creating a spell-like effect.

The effect change according to the user species. Luke says that with Burry mana control proficiency, it is safe for him to use, instead of Luke himself that cut himself alongside a part of the cupboard. Between Luke hands, it allows him to vastly amplify the cutting power of the blade and to extand the reach, probably like a pressurized wind blade. Between Burry paws, it allows him to use The unbreakable Echelon, an Avian-Canine amber that teleport people near their allies, and he does so by throwing the knife.

Rune eye implant

Rune eye gem

Rune eye gem mana vision

A hard gem in the form of an eye, thought to be jewelry at first, found by Teak during an excurtion and given to Rune. Rune eye gem is a false glass eyes that is filled with tiny connections within, that originally appear inert with mana vision. Once slowly charged with mana and underwater, it turns elastic and soft, and It blink in quick regular waves of energy when underwater. It tried to suck up Luck own mana, inflicting pain and trying to “rewire” him as if it was part of his body, and temporarily made him blind.

During the "Howling Echoes" part of Rune route, he stabs himself in the eyesocket and implant it in himself and is revelead to be fully functional. It seemingly allow him to read the displays in Shelter's canon room.

The Shelter

The Shelter is in itself a vast relic in itself, drawing mana from the atsmophere to fuel itself and its various systems and technologies. The doors, light and every apparatus are all fuelled by mana. Among Shelter attached relic can be the garden that can grow any biological material(such as meat) and above all the giant turret that can shoot a blast of energy powerful enough to pierce through a moutain.

Chevkov's Bomb

A small detonating box brought by Teak, thought to be a musical instruments. It contain ungulate, feline and canine mana to generate the explosion-like ember "breath of colchis", a purple explosion that suck up all mana in the air.

Black Knife

An unseen black knife made of crystal, something the Observer seemingly altered at some point, turning it pitch black. It has the power to turn someone into a monster when it is activated. Burry has found a way to replicate it in his research back when he worked still for the Grove.

Fenrir's Leash

A rope that catch light strangely, serving as a powerful catalyst of the concepts of connection and binding of Canine Mana.

It create an unbreakable seal, can anchor onself another person, and it is one of the necessary component in the creation of the Royal Geass. It is mentioned such hex can normally only used on a willing canine, and the relic itself has to be in one’s possession at the moment of issue a Geass-bond order, but such limitations don’t apply to Alon, still needing to Leash to initiate his seals, but once set, he can activate the effects at will.

It is mentioned that Alon only can use the full power of it, as Alon is the King, “Unity manifest”, and that he supposedly created it, though Gunner was probably referring to a previous incarnation.

A single thread of the Leash could still keep some of the whole relic's magic.
