He learned of his faith - his death.

He learned many things that wouldn't be known by the public.

You're a walking encyclopedia.

It wasn't mere coincidence that the prescripts brought him to you.

What he knows about you is exactly from your thoughts, you didn't talk much about yourself.

He provided you a home and necessity with no particular reason, he could see the distrust on your face.

He doesn't need to hear your mind. Being involved with the Index leads to somewhere people aren't fond of. Even he knows without voice it out.

It didn't take long for you to suspect.

Rien wasn't exactly surprised considering that your mind still remained despite the cruelty of The City, your usual reserved face was eerily reminisced to his. What surprised him was your emotional fragility underneath it all, it fascinated him that you, who hold many knowledge still held deep emotions.
